Problem with one of the references

Book - Kennedy, Rankin (1905). Modern Engines and Power Generators. Vol. V. London: The Caxton Publishing Company

This text is used as a cited ref in the section on "Four-stroke and two-stroke cycles" and "Similar Pumps" where a machine called the "Joy Pump" is described.

The problem is that the actual book does not mention Humphrey pumps or Joy pumps.  Note that publication date of 1905 is 4 years before Herbert Humphrey first described the Humphrey pump.

Your filleting operation has rendered the whole article much less comprehensible. Also your careful "detective work" in removing these "false references" would have been better if you'd looked at the right edition of Rankin Kennedy, the 1912, not the 1905. As the title of 'Modern Engines' suggests, this was a book focussed on modern developments. Not unusually for the period, but something that Rankin Kennedy was known for in particular, he'd write a new title with perhaps 3 volumes to it (the 1905 edition here), then every few years it would be rewritten as a new edition. Not so much rewritten, but with a new volume added on as a supplement, especially for recent developments. So the three editions of this title go from 3 to 4 to 5 volumes and (just as originally cited before this change) the 1912 edition covers Humphrey and Joy pumps. Exact wording of the reference given was : Kennedy, Rankin (1905). Modern Engines and Power Generators. Vol. V. London: The Caxton Publishing Company. The year was clearly specified in the reference. Note that there was a three month period between the notices of incorrect citation and the edits.
I see your point on the reference having been edited and the date changing from 1912 to 1905. I have restored the section.Stivushka (talk) 17:39, 15 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
