Hounds might originate from asia?

i was reading http://books.google.com.au/books?id=jyYOAAAAQAAJ to cobble together a coherent description of the history of the basset hound, and i was interested to note that the authors believed hounds to originate in the east. Specifically, i draw your attention to these facts:

  • Large English and French hounds draw their ancestry from the hound pack owned by St Hubert. I have yet to attempt to delve into dogs in belgium in the 6th century, but I have never seen an account yet that traces these hounds back further.
  • While sight hounds appear to have been in Egypt since ancient eras, the trade opened in the middle kingdom brought a wide range of imports that have been depicted as well. Notably, dachshund-like dogs, other hounds, and molossers.
  • Afghan hounds are dated to about 6th century BC. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gmip (talkcontribs) 13:05, 15 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • "Dogs of similar size and purpose to the modern Beagle[a] can be traced in Ancient Greece[2] back to around the 5th century BC." Gmip (talk) 12:52, 16 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • The Irish Wolfhound is very old; there are suggestions it may have been brought to Ireland as early as 7000 BC.
  • Swedish hounds are probably from rome. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gmip (talkcontribs) 13:05, 16 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
sight hounds are apparently arabic - is the ancient "native greek Laconian" the source of scent hounds? (the other important greek and roman dog being the Molossian, molossers being seen in asia at thier earliest source 1100BC, despite MOllosians also being claimed to be native to greece) Is it asian as well? http://www.mlahanas.de/Greeks/Dogs.htm Gmip (talk) 13:16, 16 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
