Citing Sources

All editors on this page would be wise to check out our policy on reliable sources. If information is just hearsay or from primary sources (e.g., "I saw it with my own eyes"), it is not verifiable and should not be included. (ESkog)(Talk) 12:28, 16 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

When information is published it needs to be reliably verifiable as is the policy of wikipedia. The source needs to be accurate, reliable and readily accessible to the public. Anything short of this constitutes hearsay, vandalism and false accusations. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Johnsmich (talkcontribs) 11:09, 12 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah? Well there is no substantiation that any of the cited alumni or staff ever went to the school--and I'm sure the same applies to all schools in Wikipedia. Let's remove 'em all, eh?! Or, preferably, let's get real, please. --Bjenks 15:29, 12 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Achievement of public prominence in various fields of endeavour

The article states in the notable alumni section: "Andrew Chan - convicted drug trafficker, a member of the "Bali 9", Chan was at Homebush Boys High School till year 10." Achievement in what? Is there a more appropriate category to place this piece of info?Pristine 08:38, 25 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes indeed. Together with the thug Roger Rogerson, Chan should be either removed altogether or placed under a more meaningful heading, like Notorious convicted criminals or Negative newsmakers. --Bjenks 09:18, 24 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Typos

OK, will someone please unprotect this article and search/correct these typos: recogonised, Certifiate, 'team were runners up'. Also, here's one OB who remembers a couple more notable staff:-- Olympian oarsman Dave Anderson and NSW and Test leg-spin bowler Peter Philpott, during the 1950s. Notable Alumni should also include André Frankovits, former Executive Director, Human Rights Council of Australia, and Emeritus Professor Richard Collins, [1] the former Head of Physics at the University of Sydney. WikiProject class rating

This article was automatically assessed because at least one WikiProject had rated the article as start, and the rating on other projects was brought up to start class. BetacommandBot 10:18, 10 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

We have obvious problems in this section (a) from citation difficulties—especially in establishing a subject's exit year from the school; and (b) the potential for unknowns to register potential vanity entries which are impossible to verify or assess in any way without a wikilink or valid independent citation. My suggestion is that (allowing 3 months for consideration) we restrict this section to persons with established Notability (WP:N) whose year of exit is stated, which, at least in principle, permits credentials to be verified (WP:V) through the School magazine and final examinations lists, etc. In the absence of alternative proposals, I will proceed to edit the section as best I can with the intention of preserving the names we have (if possible) and ensuring that the section is maintained more reputably and usefully in future. Cheers Bjenks (talk) 07:42, 17 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Information about living people who attended the school and whose names are recorded in school magazines and examination lists, inter alia, is being methodically targeted and deleted by an editor who lacks the appropriate sources and is thus unable to check them, even if and when they are documented to her satisfaction. Perhaps we could supply Michellecrisp (who is in a location remote from Sydney) with the telephone numbers of the eminent alumni whose credentials she wishes to verify. Alternatively, would it be possible for someone to provide hard copies of the detailed references and make an appointment for either her or a trusted delegate to sight them at an agreed location? In the mean time, it would be a gesture of good faith if Michellecrisp's constructive encyclopedic endeavours were transferred to the many more deserving targets throughout Wikipedia. Can I ask that discussion be held on this page instead of on diverse user pages where it is harder to follow. Cheers Bjenks (talk) 05:44, 29 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm applying the same standard I would to any article. the risk being that people may add notable alumni to any school article without clear justification or known proof they attended the school. Comments such as "transferred to the many more deserving targets throughout Wikipedia" or concerning my location are classical Wikipedia:OWN#Events. Third opinions

If there are no reliable sources cited, then it is original research and breaches our policy on verifiability.--Matilda talk 00:41, 30 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have to agree there. Wikipedia:Reliable sources should be clear enough about what's required to make claims, especially if those claims are about living persons. While calling up someone on the phone is one way to satisfy Wikipedia:Verifiability, it isn't really practical in that it doesn't scale up when too many people try to check. A book, newspaper, or other publication serves as a better source.
Looking over the disputed section, I must also say it wouldn't hurt to reformat those citations by using the templates provided on WP:CIT. ~Amatulić (talk) 02:30, 30 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Withdrawing from discussion

Having looked at various guidelines, I feel obliged to disclose that I attended HBHS for three years in the 1950s and will therefore refrain from making any further contributions to this article on potential POV grounds. In any event, it has not been the most productive editing experience I have had with Wikipedia. Cheers Bjenks (talk) 01:26, 30 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your comments, if you wish to add reliably cited information in future you are welcome. I have to say that I've encountered this issue before on school articles, people wanting to add lots of names to alumni list. Michellecrisp (talk) 01:29, 30 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
