Reference requested

I have moved the following edit from the article to here until it is properly referenced.

The city was developed by Joseph Young, a former resident of California. He chose to name the area after the town that had once been so attractive to him.

I started reverting edits from this editor because I could find nothing to support material he added to an article. I stopped reverting when I saw that there were sources for edits he made to other articles. I have asked him to provide references for his edits. I do want to discourage editors from adding unsourced material to articles as that only makes cleaning up the articles harder. -- Dalbury(Talk) 10:23, 6 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Adam Walsh, the late son of America's Most Wanted host John Walsh, was kidnapped from the Sears department store in the Hollywood Mall in 1981.

History of Hollywood, Florida

First I would like to say that Hollywood is my home town, and I lived there for much of the first quarter century of my life. I was disappointed that there is very little on the history or importance of this town which is one of top ten in population in the state of Florida.

The "Diamond Of The Gold Coast" (Hollywood's official nick-name) used to be called "The Dream City" because the founder of this town, Mr. Joseph W. Young, dreamed of building a motion picture colony on the east coast and named his town in homage to the famous movie capital in California. Mr. Young purchased thousands of acres of land in c. 1920 where Hollywood is now located, between the established cities of Miami and Fort Lauderdale. It was part of a frenzied real estate boom that put South Florida in the nation's spotlight. Joseph Young dubbed his new town "Hollywood by the Sea" to distinguish it from another one of his real estate ventures - "Hollywood in the Hills", New York! This real estate boom abruptly ended because of the devastation caused by The Great Hurricaine of 1926 (these storms were not named back then). The damaged and loss of life in Hollywood was so great that local newspapers, such as the Miami Herald, reported that Hollywood was second only to Miami itself in suffering losses.

Hollywood is a planned city. It was carefully laid out not only with the usual streets and avenues but it features circles and crescents. Hollywood Boulevard from the downtown Young Circle park eastward to the A1A bridge on the beach is one of Florida's loveliest boulevards: it is very wide and planted with tall straight Royal Palms on either side, giving a grand and elegant appearence. On this strip of Hollwood Blvd. is the Joseph Young Mansion, perhaps the oldest house in Hollywood (c.1921), and a splendid example of Mediterranean architecture so fashionable in those days.

Unreferenced sections

I went through and greatly expanded the information in the infobox, formatted citations correctly, updated the population figures (using Census Bureau data) and cleaned out a lot of cruft and trivia. However, the neighborhoods and famous residents sections are totally unreferenced, and I have tagged them as such. If you are watching this article (and it appears that there are some of you), please add references to those sections. Please remember to use reliable sources for the information (not blogs or MySpace, and not commercial sites that exist primarily to sell property or products). I removed that because the link was dead, and because it was not formatted correctly (with the article's title, publication date, and writer) there was no way to verify the information. When you add sources, you have to have all of that information, because web links (especially to news articles) eventually die, and the only way to verify the information is by searches in hard-copy papers (such as a newspaper morgue) or other retrieval services, for which the article's title and publication date are a virtual necessity. A bare link to a TV station's news center is useless. I fixed the citations you added to the correct format, although I am a bit wary of the first one. "Alternative News Network", running in a blog-like format, is not a particularly reassuring source, although they credit The Ledger (the Lakeland, Florida paper), which is a reputable source. I used The Ledger as the publisher, although the story has disappeared behind the archives firewall on their site. The information, which is now referenced correctly, can be left in place, although I question whether it is really needed for this article. Lots of cities have had FBI probes of their governments, but almost none of them are in the articles for each city. Horologium t-c 16:04, 2 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Police controversy

I've reverted the comment about an incident this year, as the cited source was an advocacy web site, which means the item did not meet the requirements of two of our fundamental policies: Wikipedia:Verifiability and Wikipedia:Neutral point of view. Per Wikipedia:Notability_(criminal_acts), I suggest this section be removed. None of the sources cited suggest anything more than a local focus. The only article still accessible comes from The Miami Herald via the Sun-Sentinel. Neither topic is even covered at Wikinews. --Scaletail (talk) 19:17, 2 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

"Skyline" image

I removed an image of a sign that was placed in the slot for a skyline image. While the image may have been taken in Hollywood, I fail to see how it adds anything to this article, nevermind that it is definitely not a picture of the city's skyline. --Scaletail (talk) 16:20, 5 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]


Organized Crime

This reads like a puff piece. From the Depression to the Post-War Era, Hollywood was a center of organized crime activty including casinos and bars. Why is this not mentioned? Orphaned references in Hollywood, Florida

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Hollywood, Florida's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.
