The lede

I do not mean to be harsh but the lede is confusing and does not seem to establish what the article will discuss. I read it several times and was still furrowing my brow. Perhaps others will see it differently... Gandydancer (talk) 01:01, 4 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You're right. It's horrible. It is intended as a general discussion of the kinds of texts one finds in the earliest written records (excluding the very earliest texts we have which are simply lists of inventories and household accounts of ruling houses.) These texts are a jumble of materials we would now class separately under legal, religious, medical, etc. It is therefore difficult sometimes to tell whether a particular condemnation of, in the case at hand, abortion would have legal force. I will look at it tomorrow. I did call for contributions before I published it; but, no-one responded.Ermadog (talk) 09:19, 4 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Ancient sources

I have strong objections to 2 of the sources used in this section. This one:

Killing of a woman, a Shudra or an atheist is not sinful. Woman is an embodiment of the worst desires, hatred, deceit, jealousy and bad character. Women should never be given freedom.” Bhagvad Gita (Manu IX. 17 and V. 47, 147)

As is known, the Bhagvad Gita is a symbolic text and if these words actually are in the text they may well be a symbolic statement rather than "advise". I see that this phrase is making the rounds used as a basis for religious and racial hatred, and I doubt it should be used in Wikipedia unless one is certain that it is accurate.

And this source: ^ a b The Return of Quetzalcoatl - Chapter 17

This is not a published book but rather a blog. Reading this "chapter" and one of the others one is presented with some pretty biased "facts". This guy is a lunatic. From Chapter 11 he discusses the Spanish takeover of Mexico:

The Amerindians got what they deserved. But presently, who condemns the ancient dwellers of the Americas? In a politically correct world it cannot be said that the infanticidal pre-Hispanics were psychologically dissociated; that the military theocracy was composed of serial killers, or that they were morally inferior to us. But the moralists were not always muzzled. In the colorful Spanish of his time, Bernal wrote a chapter, “How the Indians of all New Spain had many Sacrifices and Clumsiness that We Took Them Away and Imposed on Them the Saintly Things of Good Doctrine.” Bernal’s cheekiness does not cease to fascinate me: and it is pathetic that, half a millennium later, compared to those soldiers the historians, ethnologists and anthropologists of today have psychogenically regressed. I will illustrate it through the other pre-Hispanic empire. Gandydancer (talk) 17:30, 21 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

There has been no comment about my concerns - I will remove the information that I find not properly sourced. Gandydancer (talk) 14:00, 2 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
