WikiProject proposal: Psychedelic music

If interested, please offer support for a WikiProject focused on psychedelic music.--Ilovetopaint (talk) 01:48, 11 January 2017 (UTC)

I've never really understood what "psychedelic music" is supposed to mean. There's San Francisco style West Coast, which is mainly traditional American folk music, but played loud; LA-style West Coast, which arguably comes down to The Doors and Love; and then there's a variety of European styles, which are completely different from West Coast music - e.g. the Canterbury bands, like Soft Machine, Caravan and Gong, which were mainly jazz-inspired, and the likes of Can (which I lack the words to describe - 'avant-garde rock' is the best I can manage). I'm not aware of a US East Coast 'psychedelic' style; closest I can get would be the Velvets, but they were smackheads, not tripheads. I think they've said they positively didn't like acid.
I can't see a unifying feature there, other than that the musicians in question all supposedly were inspired by LSD at one time or another. I think they were all just very good musicians trying to make good tunes, at a time when LSD was popular.
Oh yeah - Love were smackheads; JM was a pisshead; JG had a period when he had bad problems with smack. Booze and smack are not at all psychedelic. So it doesn't seem to be about the musician's preferred poison.
So I'm not sure there's a rationale for a Wikiproject, but I'm open to persuasion. MrDemeanour (talk) 17:02, 8 December 2018 (UTC)

Bruce Hornsby

The article listed Hornsby as a pianist. By definition, wikipedia describes a pianist as this - A pianist (/ˈpiːənɪst/ PEE-ə-nist, /ˈpjænɪst/ PYAN-ist) is an individual musician who plays the piano. Hornsby did more than play the piano. He also played accordion and was a vocalist with the Dead. I made the change to state that fact. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.146.131.183 (talk) 04:27, 23 November 2017 (UTC)

Move discussion in progress

There is a move discussion in progress on Talk:Grateful dead (folklore) which affects this page. Please participate on that page and not in this talk page section. Thank you. —RMCD bot 15:01, 5 March 2018 (UTC)

Garofalo?

The article cites repeatedly a "Garofalo" which has evidently been omitted from the reference list. Could someone dig it up from the page history and reinsert it? Thanks. --Ehitaja (talk) 11:56, 10 March 2018 (UTC)

@Ehitaja:  Done, here. To do this, I did View History --> Revision History Search, and searched for "Garofalo". That showed where the reference had been added, in 2005, here. I then reformatted the "book reference" to a "cite book", and put it inline. Mudwater (Talk) 13:37, 10 March 2018 (UTC)
@Mudwater: Thanks! I'll try to spread it into other wikis where people have translated this article and, being somewhat puzzled, left the reference as it was. It has spread to quite different languages like Estonian and Spanish, probably some more. --Ehitaja (talk) 23:16, 10 March 2018 (UTC)
@Ehitaja: Excellent. Thank you. Mudwater (Talk) 23:45, 10 March 2018 (UTC)
I think I'm done with the rounds. Spanish, Estonian, Croatian, Serbian, Bavarian, Georgian... the toughest part was getting rid of the annoyingly persistent visual editor in Japanese. This was fun. And I only speak one, perhaps two of those. --Ehitaja (talk) 23:51, 10 March 2018 (UTC)

Steve Parrish quote

File:Grateful Dead - Steal Your Face.jpg

Roadie for the Dead: "What does the skull with the lightning bolt represent? It meant 'bang, man, you've got enlightenment.' And you're going to use it to change the world." Steve Parrish interviewed in the Long Strange Trip documentary, episode three. -Inowen (nlfte) 03:43, 22 September 2018 (UTC)

Sort musical types

Did a re-sort with main musical forms first, there is a tendency to put psychedelia up first, but that's incorrect. They were an Americana jug band who went electric so more people could hear. The psychedelia is just a veneer. -Inowen (nlfte) 23:03, 22 September 2018 (UTC)

Everyone Please read this

I am a veteran for everybody's information so don't neglect this. After much search, checking page condition and all, what i have observed is that this article almost needs a full re-construction and so im going to do it. Don't worry im not going to remove any contents at all. All im going to do is change their position on the page, classify them in new sections and help this page attain a GA status once again. What i need is your support(don't confuse support with assistance). I should be given time to proof that what im doing is really great. A Deadhead for the sake of the greatest live act and Jam band ever. HardSunBadMoon (talk) 13:19, 7 December 2018 (UTC)

With all due respect, I would suggest going at this slowly. Your English is...not good, I've initiated a discussion at Maroon 5 about a sub-par "In Modern Culture" added by you recently. No one owns a Wikipedia article, you cannot just stake one out and say "no one interfere while I work on it." Maybe it would be better to make a copy of the article into a new draft, work on that, then post here once done so others can opine. MarkAQuinn (talk) 13:32, 7 December 2018 (UTC)
I'm with MarkAQuinn. If you think the article needs wholesale reconstruction, go ahead; but please do it in your sandbox, and then get consensus that your version is an improvement before moving it from your sandbox into mainspace. If your work is "really great", that shouldn't be a problem, right? MrDemeanour (talk) 16:37, 7 December 2018 (UTC)
MrDemeanourMarkAQuinn Im also trying to convey the same thing. First of all Mark, i think you struggled to convey your message to us in the comment above . Its not that my english isn't good but it isn't Professional what i think is needed on a wikipedia article. I don't know what kind of english do you prefer but i speak a combination of american and british english as i am an Indian where english isn't of that much importance. Now, MrDemeanour the problem is that since i am new i don't know how to use that sandbox and all and also how would i move that into the mainspace or gain consensus. If you can give me the step-wise method of doing so it would be great. Otherwise i can also handle the task without sandbox.

HardSunBadMoon (talk) 18:07, 7 December 2018 (UTC)

Isn't of that much importance? English is quite critically important when editing the English Wikipedia, I believe. This is doing nothing but reinforce my opinion that a non-native speaker should not be making wholesale changes to an article of a prominent rock band. MarkAQuinn (talk) 20:20, 7 December 2018 (UTC)
As I wrote in answer to your query at TeaHouse, I recommend you copy one section at a time into your Sandbox, work on revising it there, check the references are OK, then paste it into the article. Expect that every change you make (addition, deletion) will be scrutinized by editors who have been watching and contributing to this article for years (and are likely old enough to have seen the Greatful Dead perform). Expect that most of your changes will be quickly reverted. When that happens, come back here to Talk to start another discussion. David notMD (talk) 21:24, 7 December 2018 (UTC)
HardSunBadMoon your English is not good. Didn't you know it's always spelt with a capital E, for example? But much worse than that the rather superior and conceited attitude you display above suggest you will not last long at Wikipedia. On the positive side, you are prepared to ask for help. My advice to you would mirror that of MarkAQuinn, to take your re-drafting elsewhere and just slow down a bit. This is hardly a dusty article. It's the result of thousands of edits over many years. Please try and respect the work of those editors who have been here much longer than you. Also please learn to at least sign properly. 109.146.98.190 (talk) 21:34, 7 December 2018 (UTC)
HardSunBadMoon As others have observed, your English is quite bad, judging by the standard of your comments here. I do not want to have to fix spelling and grammar mistakes in your work. If you post English that is so bad that it makes the article worse, I will just revert it, rather than trying to repair it.
This may be the language issue, or it may be simply your newbie-ness; But it's not generally taken well if you march into an article talk page, demand that everyone pay attention to your post (see the subject you chose for your new section), announce that the article is so awful it needs a complete overhaul, and then claim to have some kind of exclusivity over the article until you have completed your editing project. No such exclusivity exists.
You seem to have been here as an editor for just five days. May I suggest that you stick to making small, uncontroversial improvements to this Wikipedia until you have quite a lot more experience? Say, a few hundred edits, and a few months? People will respond constructively to small edits, and that will help you improve your work. If you make huge edits full of mistakes, you will just get reverted as vandalism, usually silently (i.e. no feedback, so no improvement).
You might also consider editing a WP in a language in which you are stronger; I don't know what your native language is, but for example there is a Hindi Wikipedia [here].

MrDemeanour (talk) 22:11, 7 December 2018 (UTC)

Work speaks louder than words, lads. You all will take your words back once i have done what i wanted. "Isn't of that much importance" referred to the importance of English in my country and not Wikipedia. Moreover, i don't think grammar and all has its importance the same in talk pages as it has in articles. And Mr. IP address, I will last longer here than you think. But you won't for sure, if you kept behaving disrespectfully as you have done here with me. I came here for advise and i have got it. Please check the grammar and spellings this time. Thanks.

HardSunBadMoon (talk) 00:53, 8 December 2018 (UTC)

Advice, not advise. Spelling, not spellings. Language aside, you have chosen to throw down a gauntlet. Edit away if you wish, but expect to be closely watched, reverted as warranted, and temporarily blocked if your edits are deemed by an administrator as not contributing to Wikipedia. Persist, and this behavior could lead to a longer block. David notMD (talk) 02:00, 8 December 2018 (UTC)

SOCKPUPPET? HardSunBadMoon registered on 12/4, but may have been editing previously under Jgriffy98 and 157.43.83.254 (and others?). To quote a 12/4 posting to an editor's Talk page: "I handle multiple accounts. You should have guessed it. Only a veteran would try to gain consensus before editing." At HSBM user page, claims to be a teenager, yet in a posting at the Talk page of Abelmoschus Esculentus claimed to have originally joined Wikipedia in 2007. Style-wise, tends to use word "friend" and wants to escalate disagreements to try to get other users blocked. Content-wise, rock music. Based on this, I have initiated a sock puppet inquiry. David notMD (talk) 12:22, 8 December 2018 (UTC)

David notMD I didn't expect someone as experienced as you to be talking this way to a fellow wikipedian who is determined to help others. Don't you think your comments about me is disrespectful and rude? Talking this way to an Administrator would have done a huge amount of damage to you. Since, you know the fact that i am not as much experienced and can't take advantage of your rude behaviour, you crossed the limits. But, thats ok to me. What i know that peoples having respect for me are more in number than those who dislike me, so your hatred doesn't matters to me. And before taking an action, always remember that Karma hits back. I won't forget this disrespect to a learning editor who always tried to be gentle with you. Now, you can say me whatever you want. I will only dedicate my time building an encyclopedia.

HardSunBadMoon (talk) 15:28, 11 December 2018 (UTC)

He's not being rude; he's saying he thinks you are a serial sockpuppet operator, and has reported you to the appropriate admin noticeboard. If he's right, then it looks as if you have been extremely rude to other Wikipedia editors - the rudeness in question would be some of the most extreme that I've seen.
Your remark "always remember that Karma hits back" really sounds like a threat to me, and following that with "I won't forget this disrespect" just emphasises that you are not really talking about karma as a cosmic principle, you are uttering threats.
I think it would be best for you if you were to stay away from articles, article talk pages and user talk pages while the sockpuppet investigation unfolds; you are not helping yourself. MrDemeanour (talk) 17:16, 11 December 2018 (UTC)
Conversely, if the sockpuppet query has a no such finding result I will apologize. Which, in my opinion, will end any karma imbalance. David notMD (talk) 02:56, 12 December 2018 (UTC)
HSBM indefinitely blocked because of being confirmed sock puppet. David notMD (talk) 01:34, 27 December 2018 (UTC)

Notice of an RfC about including the word "The" in song/album article titles

Hello there! I started a discussion on the page Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style/Music on 7 July, and it hasn't received any responses. This RfC concerns the use of the word "The" in band names in parentheses in the titles of articles about songs and albums. Further elaboration can be found on that discussion page. I would appreciate thoughts from anyone who may be interested in the discussion. Thank you. –Matthew - (talk) 20:54, 11 July 2019 (UTC)

I am curious about this too. All this band's albums and their own official website name them as "Grateful Dead", not "THE Grateful Dead". 2406:3400:419:3B70:A927:F14B:55F4:F4D (talk) 00:20, 25 April 2023 (UTC)

sales figure

"The Grateful Dead have sold more than 35 million albums worldwide." - 1) unreferenced in the article's body, and 2) wildly inflated - but this is not the only Wiki article suffering from that problem in terms of rock groups. While very popular, the Dead have never moved that much product. There are sites that can give a fairly solid answer while not perfect (there is one site that can give exact figures after a certain year.) Cheers! 104.169.37.72 (talk) 20:37, 23 September 2019 (UTC)
