Grenoble: from Latin "Gratianopolis". Grésivaudan: from Latin "Gratianopolitanus" (see Ferdinand de Saussure); a splendid example of how different Latin vowel-lengths, syllable-quantities and accentuation can give unrecognizably different outcomes in the violently phonologically innovative French language.
