Apostrophe?
I'm not sure if the name of the town officially has an apostrophe or not. Either way, we've got to choose one and stick to it because it's sloppy to have it spelled both ways in various places in the article. I know that the sign at the train station has it without the apostrophe - "Goldens Bridge." But it would seem more logical to include the apostrophe. Anyway, there's probably an official spelling somewhere. Westknife (talk) 14:37, 17 August 2008 (UTC)
- Usually determining the preferred orthography is as simple as a Google search. Not so with this case! Google Maps has it with an apostrophe, but a number of sites go without. - I've been living here for a year, and *I'm* not even 100% sure where the apostrophe comes from. I'm pretty certain that the proper way to spell it is without, however for quite a while the train system wrote the name with the apostrophe. Looking at old train maps, many other places in the area had apostrophes in their names, which over the years have disappeared. I've seen Brewster's and Pawling's on maps, and even Goldings Bridge on an 1849 map! No signage I've seen in the town has the apostrophe, apart from old train signs at the station (when an old sign is damaged it is replaced, and new signs do not have it). In 2003 the train station formerly known as Brewster North was renamed as Southeast, and at that time Metro-North timetables and other printed materials dropped the apostrophe from Goldens Bridge. The only situation where the railroad continues to use the apostrophe is on the led message boards of the M7 trains that list the next stop. The policy of the United States Board on Geographic Names says "Apostrophes suggesting possession or association are not to be used within the body of a proper geographic name (Henrys Fork: not Henry’s Fork)."
