The book doesn't say that BALCO designed the drugs. It says over and over that Patrick Arnold created the drugs. BALCO was just the largest distributor. In fact, at the end of the book it says that Victor Conte sent a warning message out to a Greek track coach that had been getting them directly from Arnold. ESPN and The SF Chronicle also report that Arnold created the clear/cream. Cacophony 18:32, 26 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Slander?

"citing free speech protections for the authors" - surely this is incorrect.. free speech does not include the right to slander, surely? (if the accusations are false)

  • Bonds's lawyers did not sue for slander. His lawyers brought the case on the grounds of "profiting from illegally held testimony". In this case, it is free speech for the authors because it is only illegal for the government to divulge the information but not for the reporters to report it. Once the testimony is given out, reporters can write about it freely. Basically, the only illegal thing that happened was the leaking of information. The judge who ruled even said the reporters had raised 1st Amendment questions [1].Patken4 18:20, 14 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • In addition, I've just read up on the definition of slander. Unless the reporters knowingly reported falsified information, they would be protected.Patken4 18:42, 14 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
