Slight refocusing of first two paragraphs

To highlight the importance of the G&CU being the first railroad built starting in Chicago, I put it in the first sentence of the intro paragraph. To avoid repetition, then, I removed what was basically the same sentence from the first paragraph in the "History" section.

I also cut the point about the railroad being chartered a year before the City of Chicago -- while that's true, Chicago had already been chartered as a town in 1833, and then was moved to city status in 1837, a year after the G&CU was incorporated. The comparison as worded seemed a bit misleading to me, implying that Chicago hadn't yet been organized in any way.

I plan on adding some information on historical contexts which will better set up the historical information already there. James Postema (talk) 22:16, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Number of reference notes

Partly to respond to the warning at the top of the G&CU page about not having enough in-line citations, I've been including references for the material that I've added. If it seems like there are now too many reference notes, that's mainly because the sources have different information (one source describes an action but without giving a date, and another source includes the date but not much about what happened), and also because the sources don't always agree with each other and all contain some information that seems to be disproven elsewhere. So I've had to do a lot of cherry-picking, putting information from several sources into some paragraphs. Moved warning flag about lack of inline citations down to list of depots

In light of the comment above, I think it is justified to remove the warning flag about the lack of references from the prose section of this page, but instead of deleting it, I moved it lower, to the list of depots.

The final prose paragraph about commuter service doesn't have any citations, but I've added something like 60 inline citations to everything above that. The list of depots, however, doesn't have much documentation, and what's there isn't very specific or highly reliable. Finding a train timetable from the 1860s would be a great way to back up that list, or perhaps a WPA Guide to Illinois might be a good source. James Postema (talk) 16:46, 9 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
