This is one of the most unconvicing attempts to claim that some patently separate cities are part of the same unit that I have ever encountered. Choalbaton 04:17, 17 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I agree Choalbaton, I wouldnt even bother to change the preposterous "megalopolis" claim. The so called ruit is a strictly TECHNICAL terminology used by the flemish regional government to co-ordinate its urban policies and has nothing to do with a single cohesive interconnected "special" region. Brussels is not even a Flemish city although found within Flanders.
On the other side there is a so-called Bruxelles-Wallonie consistiong of Brussels, Mons, La Louviere and Charleroi. ALL of these waloon cities are just as close or even closer than Antwerp and Ghent.
What the funny guy forgets is that a metropolitan region is not a simple addition of any two cities with any kinda space in-between. -- (originally unsigned) Thewholetruthandnothingbut 21 January 2006, 17:46 (UTC)
As a professional geographer I can attest that the Flemish Diamond is indeed a megalopolis, similar to the BosWash corridor or the Ruhr valley or the Randstad. Dri3s 22 January 2006, 02:06 (UTC)
For this discussion page, I had prepared a general description of the area and explained the meaning of the term, then found this text far more to the point than the article content, so just have a look at my today's contribution there (or in the article history).
One who comes across the term, surely might want to look it up in an encyclopedia - and that's what Wikipedia is all about. I like to invite you to look for proper references in English to support the (still increasing ?) economical importance, and how this is built up: the idea behind the term is not some attempt to boast about the ranking on a list, as the article had read so far. The 5.500.000 inhabitants might be an exaggeration, a reference should support or correct this figure
I also restored a thorough scientific external link [now with more text in the article to allow readers to recognize what it is about] that had been removed, seemingly by a vandal. -- SomeHuman 2006-05-31 02:08 (UTC)
5.500.000 people? No way, West-flanders + Limburg + the parts of East Flanders not part of the flemish diamond are easily more than 2.000.000 people and Flanders + Brussels is only 7.000.000.
Other than that, I think this whole concept is crazy, why stop at those cities? If you travel from Ghent to Kortrijk you are in 100% urban zones all the time (Deinze, Waregem, Harelbeke) so why not include those? The 'Flemish Diamond' is a coined term for an industrial metropolitan area, and the westernmost part of West-Flanders belongs to the separately recognized international metropolitan area of Lille, with on Belgian territory Mouscron, Kortrijk, Ypres, Roeselare, etc. See also Urban Community of Lille Métropole. Precise circomscriptions of such areas may be subjective, though rarely crazy. This is the case for most metropolitan agglomerations, e.g. The [featured] article Belgium has in its infobox 'Largest metropolitan area: Brussels Capital Region', which may appear reasonably clear, though this specifically delimited official institution is smaller than the Brussels agglomeration; and much smaller than the Flemish Diamond — Definitions (megalopolis, metropole, urban or industrial) are not very consistent.​▲ SomeHuman 2011-03-02 08:41 (UTC)
