Hello -- I am a TA for an introductory biology lab, and we will be editing the fetal pig page as a class project from July 8th-18th. I have instructed my students to discuss changes and post informatioage of the article. We plan to discuss the use of fetal pigs for biology labs, including why fetal pigs are used in biology labs, the source of fetal pigs, as well as fetal pig anatomy and development. -- EricaVE

Hey everyone! This is an outline of what our group plans to discuss:

1. use in biology labs -why we use fetal pigs? (Dallas will do this part)

       · Very similar to human systems
       · large enough to see detail
       · fairly cheap

-where they come from (Megan has already found this)

-external links for students (online "dissection")

         · virtual dissection site
         · techniques
        · link to adult pig site??

-basic technique, lab safety (Michelle C)

       · goggles, apron, formaline risks

-preparation of lab species (Michelle C)

        · lab table, dissection kits, lab pan, rope/string

-legal issues, lawsuits, morals

       · religious/beliefs
      · university policy

- famous pigs: Wilbur, Babe

Hello!

Since we have an outline for one part I thought I would add the outline for the other section.

2. Anatomy

- Digestive System -  (This will be Michelle)
       · Answer questions about enlarged taste buds
       · Why do fetal pigs have something in their stomach
       · Any other differences (teeth?)

- Umbilical Cord Use and Circulatory System (Kristen)
       · Explain what the umbilical cord does and how it's involved in the circulatory system
       · Any other differences between a fetal pig and adult pig circulatory system

- Reproductive and Urogenital Systems (Alli)
       · Explain how the reproductive system is immature and how to find difficult parts
       · Also explain differences in urogenital system from adult pigs (if there are any)

- Similar Systems to the adult pig (Michelle, Kristen and Alli)
       ·  List systems that are similar enough to adult pigs that they do not need to be explain in great detail in this      
          article.

We also found a couple good websites to add to the external links. Maybe some videos would be a good idea too.

--Hi! I already found some interesting external links, and I can find more about the ethical issues involved and lab procedure stuff (since I'm in Dallas' group). Just wondering if anybody knows when are we supposed to start adding things to the site? I like the way the page is looking so far. I feel like a couple things in the first section may be redundant. The 2nd short paragraph of the "why used in bio lab" section seems to repeat that fetal pigs are by-products. ALSO under development is there possibly a better place to put how the fetal pigs are packaged etc.? Any more info to add to the development section as well? Just a couple thoughts. Any imput on the Urogenital section (the one I wrote so I can fix it)? Thanks

__ good day to all! i think we should add some of the photos that we "own". someone should choose one of the photos of us doing the actual dissection and add it to the part of the page that speaks about use in classrooms. i dont have enough entries, so i wont be able to add photos :-{ megan

megan again:

- there are a number of sources. biology labs get the oinkers from the supply companies that they get the rest of their supplies from. UF get's its pigs from Carolina Biological because they use "carolina's perfect solution" to preserve the organs. the aim is NOT to use formalin in the pigs because it distorts the organs

Hey guys, has anyone else had an issue with saving what they wrote? I just typed up my section and saved it and it never showed up on the main article page. I'm gonna retype it now, but if anyone has had this problem, please let me know so I don't have to keep retyping my section! hey yall. Megan here. Taking a last minute look at the page. I think we should add a section on how to determine the sex of the pig externally. The person who did the sex category under anatomy did a great job, but i think it should be incorporated in the dissection preparations portion as well, from an external standpoint. i would also like to add a picture that shows the differences externally between the male and female fetal pig, but i cant upload photos. if anyone's up and willing to add the photos for me, let me know. see ya'll in the morning :-D —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mwms2006 (talk • contribs) 05:05, 18 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
