Talk:Fear of ghosts

Worthy of inclusion?

There needs to be a discussion about why this article is worthy of inclusion, because otherwise I'm worried someone will put it up for deletion or for merging with Phasmophobia. I have added a dablink at the top to help distinguish between the two (on the basis that the Phasmophobia article is ostensibly about the clinical disorder associated with fear of ghosts, whereas this article is about culturally acceptable and widely held views on ghosts). But more needs to be done within the article to show this distinction, and to show how this topic itself is noteworthy.

The Literature and arts section should be expanded to demonstrate how this idea of fear of ghosts has been influential in literature and culture. There should be more specific examples, etc. Also, the section Fear of ghosts among various cultures needs to have something done to it, because right now it's a random and arbitrary list. If we want to have a list of culture-specific fears for every group we can, this article should be split and the list should be in a list article; this article itself should address things from a more worldwide perspective.

Another major problem that needs to be addressed in this article is the ethnocentric viewpoint. Parts of the article talk down on other cultures (I have tried to clean up the worst of it, such as "the irrational belief in ghosts still exists in some cultures" or something like that), which is not good. Isn't there also belief of ghosts in "modern" Western cultures? The article makes it seem as if there isn't, and Westerners are all too advanced for that hokey pokey. I personally don't have any information on this stuff to add, but someone needs to do that, and in the meantime I'm going to tag the article. —Politizer ^talk/_contribs 21:51, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

I am afraid you are a bit mistaken. It is not "ethnocentric" and there is a comparable piece quoting "modern Western" philosopher about "modern Western" fear of ghosts. In general, you are right. The article requires significant expansion in all aspects and a more balanced text. It is a mere placeholder for a missing topic: most of fears of ghosts are not psychological disorder, and the article has close to zero intersection in subject with "phasmophobia", which is domain of shrinks. Effects of ghost

There must be made a paragraph about the effects of a ghost! An example: The effect of the ghost ship of the flying Dutchman.
