Wasps

'Spheksophobia' doesn't look very convincing. Shouldn't it be 'sphecophobia'? Or 'sphexophobia'? Soczyczi 16:36, 16 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Strange spelling indeed. It looks like it was recently coined using a model "fear of x translates as x + o + phobia". I would go for "sphecophobia", but that word doesn't seem to exist (at least, so much is indicated by Google). I wonder how unreasonable a fear of wasps must be for it to count as a phobia anyway. They are poisonous and they are more likely to sting than bees are, so it is kind of natural to stay away from the animal. There doesn't seem to exist a Wikipedia article about it either. Spheksophobia seems to be correct: [1] --Thrissel (talk) 06:58, 5 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

"Sensationalist movies and media"

Is this a real cause of a fear of bees? I have struggled with this phobia since childhood. I have been left unable to perform simple outdoor tasks like weeding for even taking rubbish to the bin because. I was conscious of this fear before I started watching television.

There must be more to this phobia than media hype. This article desperately needs expansion.

??? Where else could it come from? Clearly something has associated bees with deep anxiety in your brainmap. You weren't born with a fear of bees. You weren't born with a conception of bees. I mean, media, or a personal experience, or conscious or unconscious communication to you by an adult... you know, regular stuff 69.122.244.46 (talk) 11:58, 14 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Why am I scared?

I've had a fear of bees and wasps since I was young but it is definitely not because I was stung. I was only stung by a wasp a few years ago (first time). I expected my fear to go away, but it's still there. I'm not scared of being stung, I've been through that, and endured much more pain than just a little pinch. Yet I still run away when I see a bee or wasp flying overhead, toward me, or even near me. I'm not afraid of it attacking me, I'm afraid of them landing on me because I find it disgusting, just like spiders (but I don't run away from spiders). Maybe I can't stand the appearance of Wasps/Bumblebees? •USER•Androo123•TALK•
