The result of the move request was: not moved as there is no consensus that Brett Favre is the primary topic. (closed by non-admin page mover) Bradv 16:42, 23 May 2018 (UTC)
Favre → Favre (surname) – Move in order to redirect Favre to Brett Favre. It appears to me that Brett Favre is the primary topic, and most people typing in Favre will be looking for him. - First, that's irrelevant as this discussion is about whether Brett Favre is the primary topic for Favre; are the vast majority of people who enter "Favre" in Wikipedia looking for Brett Favre? We don't know. Most of them would probably have entered "Brett Favre" if that's who they were looking for. And second, that's called WP:RECENTISM and ignores long-term significance. Also note that Brett Favre is going to be popular in America, but not so much internationally. Nobody else plays American football seriously and American football stars are little known outside their own country. He may be the primary topic for Brett Favre (if there was another one), but not for Favre generally. That's too much of a leap. He's hardly Shakespeare or Churchill! Everyone knows that's who you're most likely talking about if you use those surnames without a first name. Brett Favre? I don't think so. -- Necrothesp (talk) 15:07, 18 May 2018 (UTC)
- Um, view statistics are absolutely relevant to a discussion on a primary topic. A primary topic is the topic most people are looking for. So, the fact that a topic which is viewed thousands more times a month than any other similarly named topic is certainly relevant, and I would argue dispositive. Your argument is that you don't like American football and don't think it's important (at least outside of the US)- which isn't a good argument when all OBJECTIVE evidence points to the fact that one topic is primary. But, how would you determine a primary topic, other than user interactions with an article? Or do you argue that a topic with millions of user interactions is secondary to Jules Favre, with 12,000? - Page view statistics may be relevant when determining a primary topic for a full name, but not for a surname only. Very few people are recognisable out of context solely by their surname (I have mentioned two of the few who are above). Brett Favre is not one of them. Not in America. Certainly not in the rest of the world. Sorry, but he is not the primary topic for his surname. He is only the primary topic for Brett Favre. -- Necrothesp (talk) 07:39, 21 May 2018 (UTC)
