Asian Population

Anyone have any sites with stats. on the Asian pop. in Central America? Its mostly Chinese and japanese from what i know.

There are Chinese everywhere, noticeable presence in Tegucigalpa. But overall in Honduras the largest group of Asians are Arabs and methinks that will be the same in El Salvador etc, SqueakBox 23:06, 11 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]


I recently add the information for the asian population in Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Panama, couldn't find anything for the rest of the countries though.

Regarding the black population of El Salvador

El Salvador has no Africans. I challenge this sentence in the article "Salvadorans with African heritage are present, most notably in San Salvador, the capital". The only time you will see a black is when there a tourist, and maybe there are a few mestizos with distant African ancestors, but the genetic influence is negligible and not worthy of a mention. Cant find it and I dont disagree with what you are saying anyway. In Honduras all the blacks atre in the north, down south in Tegucigalpa etc a black face is a rarity though I imagine much more so in El Salvador because of it not having a Caribbean coast. if I find what I read I'll post it here but even so nobopdy is saying blacks are an ethnic group in El Salvador, SqueakBox 21:17, 12 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
There is a book's chapter about them, I found the title but alas not the book: Francisco Lizcano, “Presencia y ausencia de la población negra en El Salvador”, in Presencia Africana en Centroamérica, Luz Maria Martínez Montiel (ed.), pp 103-112 (México, DF.: Consejo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes (CONCULTURA), 1993). And in the Spanish wikipedia's article es:El Salvador#Demografía they say (without mentioning any source) "El Salvador es el único país de américa central que no tiene ninguna población africana nativa debido a la inaccesibilidad del comercio de el Océano Atlántico. Además el general Maximiliano Hernández Martínez instituyó leyes de razas en la década de 1930 que prohibieron la entrada de poblaciones negras al país.". --Pylambert (talk) 03:38, 29 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding the White population of Costa Rica

It is absolutely absurd to say that 80% of Costa Ricans are white, I have been to Costa Rica, this is very false. I quote the Wikipedia article "White Latin America":

"Chile, Costa Rica, and Guatemala have censuses which identify both whites and mestizos (people of mixed white and Native American ancestry) in one category, so the exact percentage of whites in those countries is undetermined or unknown."

Thus, this means that 80% of Costa Ricans are either Mestizo OR White, not simply white. Costa Rican white and mestizo population are point of discussion now in most academic fields related, but it is for sure that whites are not 80% of population. I think the most neutral thing to do is to putting that 94% of Costa Rican population are white or mestizo, or change to N/A like the fellow partner suggested. I´m from Costa Rica and guiding myself for my perception I think that there is a light majority of white phenotypica(not genetic) individuals in the region called The Central Valley, that allows aproximately the 50%of the population, and in other regions mestizo individuals are the vast majority. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mlnte (talk) 03:52, 21 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Indeed the source cited in the tables, the CIA World FactBook, agrees with both of you...the census numbers blend White and Mestizo populations in Costa Rica so I don't see any disagreement with the changes to the article. Just to be clear I would leave it as N/A or footnote it myself. You can't partition it in any meaningful way. Rsheptak (talk) 21:25, 21 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
