Is "island cabbage" "hearts of palm"?

Also, what is intended by bullock--beef? There is no biological difference between oxen and cattle. THB 06:12, 11 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Island Cabbage is not related to hearts of palm. It is a green, leafy vegetable that looks, in most cases, like stunted spinach. Boiled, it quickly takes on a "slimy" texture that many find unpleasant. In parts of Papua New Guinea it is referred to as "slippery cabbage" for this reason. Rapid blanching generally cooks it without rendering it "slimy", after which it makes a good addition to stir-fried meat and other island vegetables. For those living in remote areas within Vanuatu or Papua New Guinea, it is worth persevering with, because of the high iron and other nutritional content.

I suspect the writer used "bullock" because it is the Bislama word for both live cattle and the meat butchered for cooking.--IJB 04:09, 9 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

La Austrialia: group or island?

The current version says "Espiritu Santo takes its name from Queirós, who named the entire island group La Austrialia [sic][6] del Espíritu Santo …".

But he wasn’t aware that it was an island group, he thought they had reached a continent. I feel that writing "the entire island group" here and in some of our other articles gives the wrong impression. The Spaniards only visited one island of the New Hebrides / Vanuatu group; if they sighted others their impressions are not reported.

Most old (i.e. free from copyright and available online) historical accounts I've seen so far treat Australia (or La Austrialia) del Espiritu Santo as referring to just this island.

We have this footnote from James Burney (1803): "Quiros in the memorial now cited … applies his remarks sometimes to the Australia del Espiritu Santo only, and sometimes to all the lands which were known or supposed to be in the neighbourhood." (A chronological history of the discoveries in the South Sea or Pacific Ocean, p.307.) This indicates that de Quiros was somewhat indiscriminate when petitioning the crown for sponsorship to return and conquer the new land(s), but by Burney's time the name was established to refer to just the one island.

I propose changing "the entire island group" to just "it". We've already noted that he believed it to be part of a southern continent, and thus may have intended wider scope for the name.

Map needs changing

It doesn't even show all of the Vanuatu islands, but does include most of the Solomons..?!? Needs updating.WisDom-UK (talk) 21:23, 24 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
