"Stirrupless majesty"

I suspect the reason for the absence of stirrups or saddle is neither oversight nor Munro's propensity for bareback riding, but sculptural convention: a visual reference to the famous equestrian statue of emperor Marcus Aurelius on the Capitoline Hill in Rome.
