I propose to merge Water pollution in Brazil into Environmental issues in Brazil. I think that the content in the water pollution article should be explained in context, and the environmental issues article is small enough that the merging will not cause any problems as far as article size is concerned. Indeed, I agree with the comment above. This article is useless in this form and overlaps in scope with Conservation in Brazil and Environment of Brazil. Therefor propose merging it into Environment of Brazil. --Elekhh (talk) 10:13, 2 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Forbidding of cattle ranching in areas of Brazil that have much rainforest

It actually puzzles me why the government of Brazil hasn't all ready outright forbidden cattle ranching in the Brazilian areas that have much rainforest. Protein foods can be easier and much more efficiently produced using other farming techniques that don't use cattle at all (for example, factories can be set up that produce tofu or quorn (single cell protein), ... ). The soy required for the tofu can be imported from countries that don't have rainforest (and so don't require the cutting of trees to raise crops); examples are parts of China, ...). Alternatively, meat can also be imported from Europe or the west of the USA, ..., or rather than trying to find meat or meat replacements, other protein foods can be directly imported (like beans, ...) for example from Cuba, the USA, ...

An alternative to outright forbidding it would be to just forbid clearcutting any more areas and/or using any more areas than what the ranchers all ready own.

I think that this approach would benefit more people (lower and mid-income people) and only hurts a very small portion of the population (the ranchers) -actually, not even them if they decide to switch to more efficient means of protein food productions such as by the tofu production method proposed, especially as it would be more efficient and so more money could be gained by this approach than by using cattle-, so politically speaking, it's actually a good tactic for politicians, as it would help win a lot of votes. Also, it would be very good for the environment and even the economy (as it's much more efficient and probably even a lot cheaper to just create alternative protein foods locally, or import meat/meat substitutes from other areas, especially if the co2 compensations have been calculated in.

Government Role in Environmental issues

This article makes no mention of the Brazilian government's role in the worsening environmental issues. I plan to discuss how President Bolsonaro has encouraged the exploitation of the amazon, as well as the lack of enforcement of environmental protection laws within Brazil.
