E.M. Forster's Unreliable Description of the German Garden

E.M. Forster was an aspiring, and at that time unsuccessful, writer when he was hired as a tutor for the Von Arnim children. He was notoriously jealous of Elizabeth von Arnim's fame and her best-selling memoir, as described in Karen Usborne's biography of Elizabeth. His dismissive comments about her garden should be taken with a ton of salt. Nobody else seemed to share them.
