Examples Needed for Policy Subversion

I know of several examples I've encountered in the past, but nothing I can really cite as a reference:

  • Internet Explorer used to be just a download stub
  • Yahoo! Messenger likewise used to be just a download stub, with the true source of the full installation executable hidden within the stub
  • Adobe products (Reader, Flash/Shockwave player) are notorious for obfuscating their download URIs in JavaScript. On one occasion, there was a Linux update for a set of critical vulnerabilities, but their JavaScript frontend did not recognize there was a newer version available...but I was able to guess correctly the URI from their file naming conventions.
  • Sun (now Oracle) wanted users to use their "download manager" to download Java.
  • The standard Microsoft Windows Service Pack offered from a Web page is only a stub program, but in addition they provide another link for each labelled as "For IT professionals."

So I guess I'm asking for some editors' help in documenting what I've added to this article. -- Joe (talk) 03:09, 22 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
