Galyan's Redirect

I think that the Galyan's redirect should be removed, and a separate article written discussing the history of Galyan's and the buyout by Dick's. I came to this page looking for information on Galyan's, not Dick's. 161.225.129.111 14:07, 5 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well, somebody has to decide to write it first. Lambertman 22:07, 13 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that Galyan's history needs its own page, especially referecing the outrage that Galyan's would sell to dicks in the Indy market considering that Galyan's had a loyal following and was already had a competitive pricepoint. But the owners saw a chance to sell. There is much documentation in the Indianapolis Star's history of articles and opinion sections.67.201.67.251 (talk) 17:43, 14 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

When there is enough information on Galyan's to create a new article, the information can be moved out in WP:Summary style. At the moment there is not enough information, so I am removing the {{Split}} tag. SilkTork *YES! 11:16, 31 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The Charlotte South Park Store

Greets:

I'm not sure about the reference as the pictured Charlotte South Park store as being a former Galyan. It was built during the mall remodel a few years ago and was built from the ground up as being a Dick's. Maybe (hopefully the person who posted that picture will provide a reference. I'll leave it be though for the time being.) --Drmike (talk) 22:52, 4 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Chick's with Dick's

Seems strange that nobody pointed out the change from Chick's Sporting Goods to Dick's Sporting Goods.108.23.147.17 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 22:03, 30 April 2012 (UTC).[reply]

Map removed

@JzG: why was this map removed? I've placed these maps on many articles. They are informative, encyclopedic, and desired in the vast majority of cases. In fact, a user just asked me on my talk page to add the map, which he'd only removed because it was outdated. And yet you've taken it upon yourself to remove a map that was present for 5 years without any explanation or note on the talk page. Could you please explain your reasoning? Magog the Ogre (tc) 01:10, 27 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

aside from the fact that it's a novel synthesis from primary sources, the list of locations is a promotional activity we can safely leave to their marketing department. Guy (Help!) 11:08, 27 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
No, that's not how SYN works. SYN is a prohibition on using primary sources where they could cause error, not using them where they are to be the only likely ever reliable source. As for promotional, that is just silly. I have no affiliation with Dicks nor with almost any other of the maps I've created. Magog the Ogre (tc) 20:32, 27 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Agree with Magog the Ogre, tho nice points can be made the bottom line is that removing maps such as these will never be uniformly and non-selectively implemented across Wikipedia, nor should they be since it would be unencyclopedic and arguably censorship. Aside from suggesting this at multiple wiki-project pages for a consensus that we as a encyclopedia of balanced NPOV facts want to somehow exclude facts contributed graphically in map form any removal of some of these maps hits me as against the core principals. Separate Page for Golf Galaxy

Hi all. I work for DICK'S Sporting Goods, which has owned the Golf Galaxy retail chain since 2006. If you search "golf galaxy" on Wikipedia, you are currently redirected to the DICK'S Sporting Goods page, where there is a brief mention of the Golf Galaxy brand. Also, if you do a Google search for "golfgalaxy.com," the Golfsmith Wikipedia page is featured in the Google Knowledge Graph in the search results -- I believe this is because DICK'S recently bought Golfsmith out of bankruptcy and converted 36 Golfsmith locations to Golf Galaxy stores, but there is not a Golf Galaxy Wikipedia page for Google to feature.

To avoid a conflict of interest, I requested that a separate page be created for Golf Galaxy, rather than try to write it on my own. I believe a separate page is warranted, as Golf Galaxy is now one of the largest specialty golf retailers in the world. Do you have any advice on steps I can take to help get the Golf Galaxy page published? Raymond.judy (talk) 20:33, 1 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Draft article for consideration

Hello! Over the past few months, I've been working with Dick's Sporting Goods via Finsbury to prepare improvements to this Wikipedia article as part of my work at Beutler Ink. I've disclosed my conflict of interest above using the "connected contributor (paid)" template, and I will not be editing the article directly. Instead, I'll be proposing article improvements based on this draft, and seeking assistance with implementation via talk page requests.

This diff shows all proposed changes to the existing article. However, I realize asking an editor to review the draft in its entirety is a lot of work, so I'm happy to tackle the article section-by-section, or as volunteer editors prefer. I'll start with the "History" section (see subsection below), but first I'd like to identify some problems with existing article, to explain why I'm offering this new draft:

  • There are problematic sources used throughout; inappropriate references include Daily Mail, Facebook, Twitter, the company's official website, not to mention several bad URLs.
  • Much of the "History" section's first half is unsourced, and Reference #12 directs readers to the company's website; the part about Team Sports HQ borders on copyright infringement.
  • The last 2 sentences about lobbyists are inappropriately sourced.
  • I suspect the "Corporate" section may be the culprit for the "This article contains content that is written like an advertisement" tag. If not, I still think this section is unnecessary detail and inappropriately sourced, and should be removed.
  • Much of the "Sponsorship" section's content is unsourced.
  • The "Acquisitions and expansion" section is overly detailed, and places too much emphasis on specific store openings and new markets (U.S. states) entered. There is also too much detail about guests attending select openings, and even what they were wearing. In the same section, the first paragraph and the sentence starting "On June 30, 2016…" are unsourced.
  • The "Company logo" section is unsourced and, I would argue, unnecessary detail.

With the updated draft, my goals are to replace unsourced and poorly-sourced content with neutrally-worded content using Wikipedia acceptable sourcing. Additionally, I seek to improve the overall flow, organization, and readability of the exiting article, updating content in the process. I also hope to remove the "This article contains content that is written like an advertisement" tag at the top of the article by addressing concerns. If no page watchers reply to my request(s), I may reach out to related WikiProject for editor assistance. I thank those who are able to help in advance.

"History" section

As stated above, I'd like to start by proposing an improved "History" section. The current "History" section has a lot of unsourced (including the 1st, 3rd, and 4th paragraphs in their entirety) and inappropriately-sourced content. Reference #12 directs readers to the company's official website.

The "History" section I've proposed here provides readers with a neutral and sourced overview of the company's history. You'll notice the draft's content touches on many of the same topics as the existing article, but does so in ways that are more compliant with Wikipedia's guidelines and manual of style. The existing article has standalone sections for both acquisitions and lawsuits information. In my proposed draft, I've done a bit of restructuring to make these subsections, since they are related to the company's history. I'd be fine having an editor review the acquisitions content separately, but I am not proposing any changes to the "Lawsuits and legal proceedings" section. Content aside, I'd appreciate editor feedback regarding having the acquisitions and lawsuits sections converted to "History" subsections.

Again, I'm seeking an editor to review the proposed "History" section and update the article appropriately (feel free to copy and paste the provided markup). I'm happy to answer any questions or concerns here or on my user talk page. Thanks in advance. Inkian Jason (talk) 21:30, 11 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Lordtobi: I see you've made some improvements to this article. I was wondering if you'd be willing to take a look at this edit request? I've proposed a new draft article, and I'm looking for editors to review sections one at a time, starting with the "History" section. Inkian Jason (talk) 15:57, 17 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
From a first look, it looks good. I can take a more in-depth look, but meanwhile, some thoughts:
  • Infobox
    • Use the full legal name of the company (in Title Case) in the |name= parameter.
    • Change the |traded_as= param to fit the formatting from the template's docs and WP:VLIST{{Unbulleted list|{{NYSE|DKS}}|[[S&P 400]] component}}.
    • "Sporting goods" isn't an industry really, consider chaning it to "Retail".
    • Add Dick Stack in the |founder= parameter.
    • Add chairman to Ed Stack's titles.
    • Move the source for the number of store locations to someplace in the body and name the number there again, so you don't have to source it in the infobox WP:CITELEAD.
    • Remove the street address, as it is not required. You can also shorten "United States" to "U.S." to save space.
    • Currencies are usually handeled through currency templates such as {{US$}}. This also adds context for which dollar is used. The first instance should be linked and all instances should have non-breaking space between the numerals and the quantifier (HTML code,  ). You can check the live article to see how I changed it.
    • Option, but you can force the use of HTTPS by putting the |url= parameter as {{URL|https://www.dickssportinggoods.com/|dickssportinggoods.com}} (which pleases MOS:COMPUTING URL rules).
  • Lead
    • Here also use the full, legal name of the company.
    • Remove the name stylization; capitalizing a word does not hold creative attributivity.
  • Other
    • In the Corporate overview section, Stacks positions requires sourcing.
    • Also consider renaming the section to "Copmany overview" for tone.
    • In "Lawsuits and legal proceedings", the second sentence in the Cushion Tech suit requires a source.
      • Definitely agree it would be ideal for everything to be sourced in this section. I've been looking but have been unable to find sourcing specifically confirming this claim. I'm not even sure Reference #53 is considered sufficient secondary coverage. Overall, I am not proposing any changes to the current "Lawsuits and legal proceedings" section as DSG (and I) prefer that the community decide on the best content for this part of the article, so I will let you and other volunteer editors decide if mention of Cushion Technologies is worth keeping. Inkian Jason (talk) 18:25, 17 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
    • In the Acquisitons section, use source 42 at the end of both claims the source supports (Galyan's and Golf Galaxy) as anywhere else in the article, you tend to source every sentence so the lack of a source on one end might confuse the reader or have them question the claim's authenticity.
    • Consider chaning the header of "Foundation" to "Dick's Sporting Goods Foundation", as people might think the section is about the company's origins.
Will take a close look when I find the time. Lordtobi () 16:34, 17 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Lordtobi: Thank you for your initial review. I've replied to all your concerns above and updated the draft article appropriately (see individual diffs above or this overall diff), and see my comment regarding Cushion. Thanks again. Inkian Jason (talk) 18:27, 17 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I went over the draft another time and it appears to be in a good shape. I'll carry the content over, though sans the mention of Cushion Tech, as I couldn't find a source for it either. Lordtobi () 16:46, 24 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
 Done. Lordtobi () 16:53, 24 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Lordtobi: Thank you so much for your assistance. Inkian Jason (talk) 16:54, 24 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Leadership and infobox updates

Hello editors, this is Eddie from DSG. I work for Dick’s Sporting Goods and was hoping someone might help me make some small changes to the article to reflect updated numbers for 2021. I will not make those changes myself because of my conflict of interest. I understand that editors may choose to make changes to my proposed content.

There were changes in a few areas I was hoping to make the article more accurate and up to date.

  • Infobox
    • Update the following in our infobox per our latest SEC Annual Reprt 10K
      • Revenue to US$9.584 billion (2020)
      • Operating income to US$741.47 million (2020)
      • Net income to US$530.25 million (2020)
      • Total assets to US$7.752 billion (2020)
      • Total equity to US$2.339 billion (2020)
      • Number of employees to 50,100 (2021)
      • Reference here: [1]
  • Company Overview
    • Update company overview section to include updated store (854) and employee (50,100) per our SEC Annual Report 10K
    • Update company overview to match the information in the infobox. This section currently lists Edward W. Stack as the CEO, when he was succeeded by Lauren Hobart.
      • This is the phrasing I suggest: Edward W. Stack serves as executive chairman and chief merchant. Lauren Hobart is president and chief executive officer. Hobart succeeded Edward W. Stack as CEO on February 1, 2021, becoming the company's first female CEO.
        • Both statements are cited in this source: [2]

Hi FormalDude,
Thanks for the help! I really appreciate it. I was hoping you might help me with two other small changes.
In the infobox, it notes we have 850 stores. Can we change it to 854 so it is consistent throughout?
In the Company overview section, it still lists Edward W. Stack as the CEO at the beginning of paragraph two.
  • I would propose that we change:"Edward W. Stack serves as chairman and chief executive officer. Lauren Hobart is president of the company and the Dick's Sporting Goods Foundation" to "Edward W. Stack serves as executive chairman. Lauren Hobart is president and chief executive officer".
  • Noting here that I changed this slightly from my original request. Stack is the executive chairman. In fact, could we also change that in the Infobox, so Stack is only listed as Executive Chairman?
Please let me know what you think, and I am of course open to other suggestions! Thank you! Eddie from DSG (talk) 20:14, 12 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

History section addition

Hi again, Eddie here. I'd like to ask what editors think about making some additions to the history section, so that it includes some recent milestones that I think fit with the article narrative.

In 2019, Dick's launched its private-label clothing line called DSG.[1] The company's other brands include the women's line Calia, and their menswear brand VRST.[2]
Dick's opened its first House of Sport concept stores in Victor, New York and Knoxville, Tennessee in 2021. The stores are larger than Dick's flagship locations, sell higher-end gear and include features such as an outdoor turf field and track, climbing wall, batting cages, and a digital golf range.[3][4] Dick's also launched Public Lands in 2021, a chain of stores that focuses on outdoor recreation including camping, hiking, and biking.[5]

Updates for Partnerships and sponsorships, and DSG Foundation

Hello! I'd like to propose a few more updates, this time for Partnerships and sponsorships and Dick's Sporting Goods Foundation. Similar to my recent request for the history section, there are some milestones that I think fit into the overall article narrative.

In 2017, Dick's entered a multiyear partnership with the United States Youth Soccer Association to provide team management technology and sponsor the US Youth Soccer National Championships.[1]
  • For Dicks's Sporting Goods Foundation, I have a couple of requests.
  1. Can we update "More than $50 million has been pledged for youth sports initiatives, benefiting hundreds of thousands of athletes, as of mid 2018." to "More than $145 million has been pledged for youth sports initiatives, benefitting hundreds of thousands of athletes, as of December 2020." per this source?
  2. Is it reasonable to add a brief mention of the foundation's most recent Sports Matter campaign?
In 2019, the Dick's Sporting Goods Foundation launched a campaign to improve access to sports for one million kids by 2024.[2]

This Fast Company article also talks about the foundation's recent work, if that's helpful.

Thanks for reviewing my COI requests, I appreciate the time volunteer editors spend helping folks like me out. Eddie from DSG (talk) 18:20, 20 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Introduction, infobox and company overview

Hello again! I'd like to make a couple more small suggestions to make everything more consistent.

  1. In the infobox and Company overview section, can we add Public Lands to the list of subsidiaries? This Fortune piece can be used as a source.
  2. In the introduction, can we change the opening sentence to "Dick's Sporting Goods, Inc. (stylized as DICK'S Sporting Goods) is an American sporting goods retail company, based in Coraopolis, Pennsylvania."?
  3. In the Company overview section, can we change the final sentence of the first paragraph to Dick's also owns and operates GameChanger, a mobile app for managing aspects of youth sports such as scheduling, communication, and scorekeeping.[1]
  4. Can we remove the part about the Dick's Sporting Goods Foundation from Lauren Hobart's title in Company overview? She no longer holds that title.

Here's my review of your edit request, @Eddie from DSG. Some feedback is required on your part.
1.  Not done: Since the Public Lands stores are not yet opened, and the apparent first opening in October is still a ways out, I have opted not to implement this change yet. Wikipedia is not a crystal ball, and while unlikely, it is possible that the Public Lands stores are cancelled and never open.
2. Not done for now: Isn't the entire name sylized in all caps? So it would, "DICK'S SPORTING GOODS"? We'd probably just add "(stylized in all-caps)" if that's alright with you.
3. Not done – please clarify: This removes mention of Team Sports HQ, Affinity Sports, and Blue Sombrero. What's the reasoning for removing those?
4.  Done
––FormalDude talk 22:13, 29 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@FormalDude: Happy to answer your questions.
  1. I do have a little update here. The Cranberry, PA store has had a soft opening ahead of the grand opening. There's not much in the way of coverage yet, but it is mentioned here.
  2. We stylize it as "DICK'S Sporting Goods". I know it's primary, but our website shows this.
  3. That paragraph focuses mostly on current stores/applications so we want it to reflect that and remain consistent.
  4. Thanks for implementing that!
Let me know if there's anything else I can clarify, and thanks for the continued help. Eddie from DSG (talk) 17:22, 3 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Eddie from DSG:

2.  Done
3. Not done for now I'm still not sure this is a necessary edit.

Updates to the page

Hello, I work for DICK's Sporting Goods.

CFO Lee Belitsky was replaced by Navdeep Gupta in 2021. This should be updated in the infobox and the body of the article. [1]

In addition, please add the following collaborations to the end of the Partnerships and sponsorships section:

  • In 2021, DICK's Sporting Goods collaborated with Nike, Inc. to provide customers with rewards. [2]
  • They also partnered with DeVonta Smith to promote their athletic clothing line, VRST.[3]
  • In 2023, DICK's entered into a partnership with the Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.), making DICK's the official sponsor of all of the association's events, including the 2023 Boston Marathon and the three-day Boston Marathon Fan Fest. [4]
  • They also became the official sporting-goods retailer of the NCAA.[5]

FormalDude You were very helpful with this page a few years ago, I hope you will consider implementing these changes. Thanks, Amanda144 (talk) 19:48, 9 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Amanda144: Sorry, but I've avoided editing this page after someone accused my previous reviews here of not being independent. Please add {{Edit COI}} to this edit request and someone else will be along to review it. ––FormalDude (talk) 04:22, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, I just added the COI tag. Amanda144 (talk) 19:55, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Partly done: I've changed the CFO's name, but I won't be adding the requested information to the "Partnerships and sponsorships" section. I think including an entire section on a company's sponsorships in a "In X year, this happened" format is inappropriate because Wikipedia is not an indiscriminate collection of information. voorts (talk/contributions) 20:57, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your help. The additions that I requested to the Partnerships and sponsorships section involve significant partnerships with notable companies that have been covered by reliable third party press. My understanding is that this is generally the kind of material that is included on Wikipedia. If your concern relates to specific formatting or phrasing, I'd greatly appreciate some examples or suggestions, and I'd be happy to adjust my request accordingly. Alternatively, if you see a better way to include this information, please feel free to change it as you see fit. Thank you for working to improve this page, Amanda144 (talk) 14:20, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi voorts, I think my reply here may have gotten missed. I've revised the paragraph according to your feedback, would this format be more appropriate?
In 2021, DICK's Sporting Goods collaborated with Nike, Inc.[1] and DeVonta Smith.[2] In 2023, the company entered into a partnership with the Boston Athletic Association, making DICK's the official sponsor of all of the association's events, including the 2023 Boston Marathon and the three-day Boston Marathon Fan Fest. [3] They also became the official sporting-goods retailer of the NCAA.[4] That same year, DICKS' GameChanger signed a deal with Major League Baseball to promote youth sports. [5]

Hi, @Amanda144. As I noted previously, I do not believe that listing collaboration deals with brands is encyclopedic content. Wikipedia uses a summary style, which means articles should be written to cover a topic generally, not go into the minutiae of random events in the company's history (see also WP:BALASP). I also believe that content like this basically amounts to advertising. Feel free to open a new edit request so that another editor can take a look, but I will not be approving that material, no matter how it's rewritten. voorts (talk/contributions) 20:31, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Additions to page

Hello, following the above discussion, I'm opening a new request for the following updates to the article: In the History section, just before the Acquisition subsection, please add the following sentence:

  • In 2022, Dick's Sporting Goods launched DSG Ventures, an investment fund worth $50 million.[1]

In addition, please add the following to the collaborations to the end of the Partnerships and sponsorships section:

I implemented your requests. The first is without change and the second is with slight wording changes and movement of citations. All changes are for readability and removing jargon. Thank you for your patience. Dionysius Millertalk 14:57, 1 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

updates to the page

Hello, I updated the infobox and Company overview to remove subsidiaries that are no longer relevant and include existing ones. I also removed some outdated and irrelevant details about the Field & Stream brand in the History section, and I added that all Field & Stream stores have been closed. There hasn't been a lot of interaction on this Talk page, but please reach out if you would like to discuss any of my edits. Thank you, Amanda144 (talk) 14:03, 21 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Updates to DICK's Sporting Goods Foundation section

Hello, I have some updates to the DICK's Sporting Goods Foundation section:

The first sentence of this section mentions the Sports Matter program. Please add the following details about the program:

  • The Sports Matter program was initiated in 2014 to provide grants, equipment, and sponsorships to underserved youth sports programs.[1][2] The Sports Matter Giving Truck distributes baseball and softball equipment to thousands of athletes and children in underserved neighborhoods.[3] Sports Matter also helps disadvantaged youth to pay registration fees for athletic programs.[4] Since its inception, Sports Matter has pledged more than $100 million, giving over 2 million young athletes the opportunity to participate in sports activities.[5]

In addition, at the very end of the section, please include the following sentences:

  • In 2023, Dick's Sporting Goods celebrated its 75th anniversary with the 'Sports Change Lives' campaign, which encourages participation in sports and illustrates the positive impact of sports on social and emotional wellbeing. As part of the campaign, the '75for75' initiative granted $75,000 to 75 disadvantaged youth sports organizations.[6][7]

Lastly, I see that there is an undisclosed paid editing tag on the page. After all of the above-board work that has been done on the article, I would appreciate if this old tag could be evaluated for removal. Thank you, Amanda144 (talk) 13:44, 11 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Amanda144 (talk) 13:44, 11 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Partly done: The one thing that stuck out with this request is the removal of the paid editing tag. In order to do so, it needs checked for NPOV. I went through the Foundation section and cleaned it up for NPOV and removed the advertorial informaiton and partial implemented your request. This will need to be done with the entire page (checked for NPOV prior to the removal of the tag. I can do so if you wish but there is a lot that needs cut like most of the partnership information (why would encyclopedia readers care about Dick's helping Carrie Underwood launch a lifestyle brand?). Updates to Updates to Acquisitions and Foundation sections

Hi, Thanks to everyone who has contributed to this page in the past few months. I think it is much improved since we began. I'd like to request two more edits at this time:

Please add the following sentences to the Acquisitions section:

  • In 2016, Dick’s Sporting Goods also acquired GameChanger, a mobile scoring app company.[1]

Please add the following sentence to the end of the Dick's Sporting Goods Foundation section:

  • In 2023, Dick's Sporting Goods celebrated its 75th anniversary with the 'Sports Change Lives' campaign, which encourages participation in sports and illustrates the positive impact of sports on social and emotional wellbeing. As part of the campaign, the '75for75' initiative granted $75,000 to 75 disadvantaged youth sports organizations.[2][3]

Thank you, Amanda144 (talk) 13:37, 24 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Partly done: The second part, according to me, does not have a neutral tone The AP (talk) 09:54, 26 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
