Peter Wardle, Vegetation of New Zealand (Cambridge University Press) 1991 covers this subject; its chapter headings suggest good section headings for an expanded version of this article:

Plant distributions and Quaternary history of the vegetation; the human period (pp 14-15); Patterns and processes affecting pasture composition; ecology of pasture management (pp 276-81); ch. 15: Succession, Retrogression and Invasion (pp 507-57); ch 16: Disturbance, Regeneration and Trends in Native Forest (pp 559-602). --Wetman (talk) 02:17, 13 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Revisionism - Natural causes

There's a revisionist theory that I've heard in a couple of places that a considerable amount of burning of old-growth forest is due to natural causes: the impact of the Mahuika comet in 1430. [1]

I don't think that hypothesis is widely supported and besides the term "deforestation" is used for human induced changes to forest cover rather than natural events. Earthquakes and volcanism have had a huge effect on the forest cover of NZ but that needs to be documented elsewhere. I have to get some maps (especially this one) and research from McGlone, an often quoted source on NZ deforestation, into the article. -- Alan Liefting (talk) - 10:13, 13 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
