Better Structure

The page structure could be improved, here is an example of the table of content:

1. Definition (or brief, or history)
2. Types (i.e. quantitative, qualitative, ..)
3. Methods (i.e. Surveys, interviews and focus groups, ..)
4. Tools (i.e. Papers, Automated Systems, Text Messages, Open Data Kit, ..)
5. Issues (i.e. Security, Privacy, ..)
6. Examples

Narrow context

This page currently defines data collection within a fairly narrow context. The term is used much more broadly. See for example the range of articles classified under Category:Data collection --RichardVeryard 22:05, 4 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with him. In my opinion it should either be renamed to "Data collection (statistics)", or whatever field it fits in, either made a new lead section that covers all fields, and put the current content into one section. --ANDROBETA 08:42, 2 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I came to this discussion about this issue. I am reluctant to edit, and a little busy at the moment, but if I get a minute I will come back and try to craft some language to put this definition in context of the broader definition. I'm afraid of opening a can of worms. Really the whole article needs revision. Or perhaps there is a broader discussion of scientific data collection which this could link to. I will check on that. --rdelwicheRdelwiche (talk) 05:53, 7 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I got confused when I saw the first section named "DMP"? which doesn't fit as topic to describe data collection, while it can be under other title, such as "Tools for Data Collection". Shoully (talk) 11:15, 14 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Description of data

"Data collection is a term used to describe a process of having"

I have never heard the above used to describe the data-collection process in textbooks before. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Karlh21 (talkcontribs) 09:44, 19 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I've just reverted that vandalism from yesterday. Thanks for pointing it out - feel free to fix such things yourself. Qwfp (talk) 18:54, 19 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
