I have changed it a little bit and put up some new facts that I have read on the french wikipedia article about the CP, my french is not the best put I am lucky that I have a good friend who can speak it fluent. http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parti_Conservateur_d%27Afrique_du_Sud But some things I have changed is:

a) "About this time it reached its peak of influence, with 39 Members of Parliament, as apartheid was being dismantled, but its support rapidly declined after majority rule in 1994."

The CP had 39 mandates after the -89 elections (22 seats after the -87 elections), so I would say that it had more influence after -89.

b) "The Conservative Party argued for a continuation of white minority rule and that afrikaans should be the sole official language of South Africa. In the local elections of 1987, the Conservative Party wins 60 municipalities out of 110 in the Transvaal and 1 out of 4 in the Orange Free State. The Conservative Party collects 45% of the afrikaner votes and 7,5% of the english speaking votes."

I read this at the french wikipedia article of CP, and thought that it would be good to put it here also. You can check this on the: http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parti_Conservateur_d%27Afrique_du_Sud

But if somebody has any problems with this or any own thought please contact me. If this "new" information is false or not 100% right, please edit it so that it is 100% right. I also wrote some information about the South African referendum, 1992.

The article of Andries Treurnicht has some information that I think should be part of this article insted, but I am waiting for a "go" sign to move this information to this article. Dr.Poison 10:06, 19 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds sensible to move that information to here, as it is not personally relevant to Treurnicht's biographical page. I spotted two claims in this article that may need backing - firstly, that the CP wanted only Afrikaans to be the official language of SA, and secondly, that Derby-Lewis was convicted under emergency legislation. I read that, or it was translatet to me, on the french wikipedia article about CP. But as I now have found out, that particular information is false and I will remowe it. Dr.Poison 13:22, 20 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have long felt that the ascendency of the Conservative Party probably played a pivotal role in the decision of the Nats to start talks with Mandela and the ANC. The economy was going downhill, and the CP was gaining power. Its ascendency was fast enough that it would have taken over the govt from the NP in another election or two. I think the Nats looked at that reality and decided it was time to take a gamble. Any responses to this thesis? - Ron Kraybill
