Why does the article state in the introduction that it isn't a closed system because it can exchange energy with its surroundings, when the article for closed system states a closed system can exchange energy with its surroundings? Closed ecological system
"Although the Earth itself fits this definition, the term is most often used to describe much smaller manmade ecosystems." [24 May 2009] This is false. The Earth is not a closed ecological system. The ecology of the Earth relies on the sun, the moon (tides), stars (animal navigation) and more. - Trevor Blake

Phototrophs and closed systems.
- While both chemotrophic and phototrophic organisms are plausible, almost all closed ecological systems to date are based on a phototroph such as green algae.
There are some close systems, like Movile Cave, where the ecosystem uses chemosynthesis as a source of energy. bogdan (talk) 00:39, 31 January 2008 (UTC)
