Different, not incompatible

IME, 'chalk and cheese' is more often used in the sense of 'different' than 'incompatible'. Googling would seem to confirm this.

Also, 'oil and water' is not a particularly 'American' phrase; an appropriate Google search produces plenty of UK-based hits. --Calair 01:07, 5 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Redirect to apples and oranges inappropriate

"Chalk and cheese" indicates complete fundamental dissimilarity, whereas "apples and oranges" indicates some broad similarities but also fundamental differences. See the discussion at Talk: apples and oranges for more on this. -moritheilTalk 01:15, 4 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
