which has become part of the urban area more recently with new housing in the Thornhill and Llanishen areas of Cardiff

looking at a satellite map, that's a quite a lot of greenfield to have to build on to bridge that gap. has this really happened, or is it just that the ONS quite tight definitions are being disputed? Also, the only way Newport could be included in the same urban area is for more stuff to be built along the M4, or for the definition to be changed. Morwen - Talk 13:15, 17 October 2006 (UTC)

Metropolitan Area

Where is this stuff about a Metropolitan Area coming from? Who is making "calls" to create it? No sign on Google. It would have to include all of what was Gwent to reach 900,000 wouldn't it? Lozleader 22:08, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

Confusion about population statistics

I think it's necessary to nail the confusion about Cardiff's population stats.

The population of the Cardiff UNITARY AUTHORITY in 2001 was 305,353 [3]

The population of the Cardiff BUILT-UP AREA EXCLUDING PENARTH AND EXCLUDING RURAL AREAS OF THE UNITARY AUTHORITY in 2001 was 292,150

The population of the wider Cardiff Urban Area INCLUDING PENARTH BUT EXCLUDING RURAL AREAS OF THE UNITARY AUTHORITY was 327,706 [4]

Please note that the 'urban area' is NOT the same as the unitary authority - the former is built up from Census Output Areas: "For this report the definition of an urban area is an extent of at least 20 hectares and at least 1,500 residents at the time of the 2001 Census. The starting point is the identification by OS of areas with land use which is irreversibly urban in character [...] Areas such as playing fields and golf courses are excluded unless completely surrounded by builtup sites. [...] Separate areas of urban land are linked if less than 200 metres apart. Land between built-up areas is not regarded as urban unless it satisfies [a number of] conditions. The second stage was therefore to fit Output Areas to each area of urban land, and to calculate the combined population of the Output Areas falling within each urban area."Pondle (talk) 23:19, 23 January 2008 (UTC)
