Snopes link appears to have changed
Regarding Bob Gale's claim that the Biff character was based on Trump, @Howicus: added a link to Snopes which cast doubt on that claim (diff).
However, the Snopes link does not show the claimed content. All Snopes says about Trump on that page is:
CLAIM: Multiple social media rumors circulated on Back to the Future Day (21 October 2015): that Michael J. Fox was arrested for "insider sports betting," that Nike delivered a pair of self-tying sneakers, and that the Biff Tannen character was based on Donald Trump.
... and Snopes never follows through and addresses the Trump claim.
Snopes even did a Facebook entry on it: Was Back to the Future Trilogy's Biff really based on Donald J. Trump? ... but again, although they raised that claim, they don't address it.
I suspect Snopes has removed their original refutation of the claim, but left the claim in their article. One other source also indicates that Snopes had previously addressed the claim... probably unreliable, but interesting in that it cites Snopes refutation (http://tubitv.com/blog/2016/05/03/ted-cruz-likens-donald-trump-to-back-to-the-future-villain/ which says, "though according to snopes.com, the Biff backstory that Cruz describes might not be completely true") I also found one forum entry which is in no way reliable but which also talks about Snopes casting doubts on the issue.
archive.org does not archive Snopes. Neither does Google. And for whatever reason, the refutation of the claim not on Snopes. I'm removing it. Marteau (talk) 18:22, 9 October 2016 (UTC)
- The fact that Snopes has changed doesn't mean that the statement is no longer true. A quick search provided a more reliable source: http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2015/10/21/how-back-to-the-future-predicted-trump.html. Because of that, I would restore the statement but replace the link of the source. -- Lyverbe (talk) 22:04, 9 October 2016 (UTC)
- Bit of a pity, as the Snopes article did at one time talk about the Trump claim, but if the source is changed and unrecoverable, removing it is understandable. Howicus (Did I mess up?) 03:49, 10 October 2016 (UTC)
Snopes link
In the talk section immediately above, I discussed removing Snopes coverage of the Tannen/Trump linkage. I mentioned that the material our article referenced did not appear in the article.
That material does in fact appear in the article. It is on page 3. I am not sure if I simply neglected to check for other pages, or if it was restored, but the text I removed is in fact properly sourced, and I'm going to go ahead and restore the material I removed, exactly as it was.
