legend instead of facts

"There is also a legend that says that thanks to the humble intervention of a bat, king James I of Aragon was able to win a crucial battle against the Saracens that allowed him to win Valencia for his kingdom."

Maybe someone wants to correct this? King James I army used "salnitre" (saltpeter) (Potassium nitrate) taken from the caves of Collbató (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Collbat%C3%B3) (see http://www.poblesdecatalunya.cat/element.php?e=562) to make gun powder with it. Saltpeter is in fact the fosilized excrements (guano) of the bats living there for centuries.

Gun powder made possible the conquest of Valencia (1238). That's why a bat was incorporated in the coat of arms of Valencia.

Sources: Enciclopedia Espasa (1934), entry: "cohete" (spanish) Les grandes inventions de l’humanitè (1988), Gerald Messadié (french)

None of these legends are sound (and there are lots more). The mention is only anecdotical. The saltpetre one is also only a theory, not a fact, even if it is in Espasa. The only certain fact is that the bat derives from la "vibra". Xufanc (talk) 13:44, 3 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
