I'm sorry to say, but the introductory paragraph makes no sense as far as the chronology is concerned. First it talks about 1870 and then 1900 as if it were earlier. I don't understand what was meant. Perhaps someone would be able to clear this up. Unfortunately I have no knowledge base about this subject matter at all. In fact I'd never even heard about this subject before coming across it in another Wikipedia article as a link. Thank you
