I do not agree with this paragraph:

"One of the primary obstacles that the Bank will face will be the reconciliation of its stance against American influence and Brazil's good economic and political relationship with the USA. Brazil is the largest and one of the most influential economies in Latin America."

Brazil has not good relations with the USA, just remember the case with the visas.

The main obstacle with Brazil is if Brazil will try to play as a dominate nation or if it will accept consensus based decision (as for example the European Union or the OECD).

Article is unbalanced and POV

While researching sources for another article, I've discovered that this article is unbalanced and POV, failing to mention the significant amount of reliably sourced criticism and controversy surrounding Banco del Sur. The following need to be incorporated:

  1. BBC news
  2. Foreign policy magazine
  3. New York Times
  4. Christian Science Monitor
  5. USA Today
  6. The Economist
  7. The Economist
  8. At least 13 articles from FT.com (The Financial Times) and numerous articles in the Wall Street Journal

This article is based almost entirely on less than reliable or leftist sources, and includes no mention of the controversy and concerns raised by reliable mainstream or financial sources. Please balance. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 07:08, 26 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed, it really should be mentioned (BBC source) that "Joseph Stiglitz has endorsed the bank on those grounds. "It's good to have competition in most markets, including the market for development lending," he said." ;) Anyway, sure, the article can be expanded, but it all takes work. I do not agree. I would not take your suggestion on board. Most of these articles are now close to five years old and are therefore outdated. Comments and projections how a particular activity is likely to develop, at the time of founding an organisation, outdate very quickly. What commentators/reporters thought at the time becomes is interesting history at some point. This point has arrived.

The bank was founded before the big financial crisis hit the world which was a few days after the 2008 Bejing Olympics. In these now vastly changed circumstances the BancoSur countries appear to have fared somewhat better than other countries. Usually, Chavez is bagged in the English speaking world. But like all individuals who head a country and have a strong profile, they are only extras on the world stage, like the late Shah of Iran, Saddam Hussein, even Stalin and Mao. Let's not take the individuals too seriously. So far, the BancoSur seems to have had a positive influence on the people where it operates - we do not get reports on mass unemployment like from Spain for instance. Article name

Why is this article named Bank of the South, when the bank name is Banco del Sur? SandyGeorgia (Talk) 06:30, 26 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I think the relevant naming convention is Wikipedia:Naming conventions (use English). If "Banco del Sur" is more commonly used in reliable English sources, it should be used instead. Rd232 talk 09:43, 26 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This article lacks any information on what has happened since 2009. Or - if nothing much has changed - on why not. Perhaps someone with the relevant knowledge and references could provide an update?
