Merge proposal: Walking stick and Assistive cane

There is a proposal to merge Walking stick and Assistive cane.

Content and page image

  1. The article starts by saying This article is about a type of crutch. For walking sticks used for non-medical purposes, see Walking stick. However, much of the content is about non-assistive canes (e.g. the page image, and the mntion of the Shillelagh), assistive canes that aren't crutches (white canes), or generic information that applies to walking sticks as well.
    1. The page image isn't an assistive cane. The image description (Google Translated from teh original French) says: a cattle dealer cane. The cattle dealers did not use at trade fairs, the traditional stick chestnut but a cane called "merchant cane." His head is very angled to keep the good cane stuck around the arm, leaving hands fully available to best accomplish all acts related to the transaction (agreement papers, regulation, giving change ...) . Its stem is tapered, before resuming in the end rod, its original size. This particular profile of the shaft generates a "whiplash effect" when the cane is used to rotate or move the animals.
  2. Walking cane redirects to here, but Cane (walking) redirects to walking stick. I think both should point to the same article, and that should probably be walking stick. (The Walking stick article, and one of the comments on its talk page, claim that the use of 'walking cane' to mean 'walking stick' is an Americanism, but I've frequently heard it used in the UK too. Googling 'walking cane' gives lots of hits for that use, including UK retailers).
  3. Pretty much all the information about parts of a cane and accessories also apply to non-medical canes.
  4. As such, I think this article needs some serious rework. It may even be best to merge it with walking stick (as was proposed in 2010/2011 but rejected). Iapetus (talk) 18:18, 15 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
