Keeper or Curator?

Isn't 'curator' a more appropriate term than 'keeper'?

'Keeper' is the traditional title of curators at the Ashmolean - the reasons are lost in the mists of time!

I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. Thanks for uploading Image:Alfred jewel.JPG. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Adding the Coin Collection into the list of collections

Hello, Just wondering - the antique coin collection is mentioned in the fist paragraph about the museum's history, but would it be considered notable enough to be added to the list of collections? http://www.culture24.org.uk/history+%2526+heritage/art73200 Here's a feature about the new coin gallery. Papyrus section

A lot of papyrus fragments are listed as part of the Ashmolean Museum as the P. Oxy papyri. There are also some manuskripts of the bible. Are they still part of the Ashmolean or is the whole collection now part of the Sackler Library?--Giftzwerg 88 (talk) 16:04, 11 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Kish Tablet

The article claims, that the Kish Tablet is in the possession of the Ashmolean Museum. The articke Kish Tablet however claims, that the Ashmolean only has a copy. Which is correct?

  • Could do with more structure: the lead is too long and much of it would be better off under a History subheading.

Date of Taylor Institution

The history section contains a description of the Taylor Institution which cites Alden's Oxford Guide from 1946. "One wing of the building is occupied by the Taylor Institution, the modern languages faculty of the university, standing on the corner of Beaumont Street and St Giles' Street. This wing of the building dates from 1845–48 and was also designed by Charles Cockerell, using the Ionic order of Greek architecture.[1]" I have deleted "dates from 1845–48 and" which is of limited relevance and possibly incorrect as the Taylor Institution Conservation plan notes "Some sources list the completion date as 1847; however it must have been completed in 1845, as this completion date is listed in the 24th October 1846 edition of The Builder" Link: https://www.admin.ox.ac.uk/media/global/wwwadminoxacuk/localsites/estatesservices/documents/conservation/Taylor_Institution.pdf 81.86.211.166 (talk) 15:26, 24 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Pococke Kition inscriptions

Barthélémy Inscriptions phéniciennes

The only surviving example of the Pococke Kition inscriptions – all the rest were destroyed – is on display in room 18 of the Ashmolean Museum (https://collections.ashmolean.org/object/308786). This particular inscription was key to the decipherment of Phoenician by Jean-Jacques Barthélemy, 250 years ago (it is no.1 in the picture on the right). The Ashmolean Museum webpage does not highlight this - perhaps they are not aware. If anyone visiting the museum has time to take a photo, it would be a very helpful addition to our article. Broken Link
