"Ashcroft is a surname"- ??

Yes, it's used as a surname but its origins are clearly geographic/descriptive. In the case of Ashcroft BC, it's named after an estate - and it's debatable whether the family of said estate is the namesake of the estate, or named for the estate. Likewise with the people named Ashcroft listed, their ancestor(s) would hve gotten the name from the place they lived, not the other way around. I don't know the best way to reword the opening line: maybe just "Ashcroft is a placename that is often used as a surname" or simply "Ashcroft may refer to".....An etymology of the name seems appropriate "ash (tree) + croft".Skookum1 (talk) 14:40, 21 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
