The primary usage of this term, and as described in the article's contents, is not suitable for merging with Western Cordillera (North America), as South America is included in the term even in its English usage; there is no doubt a USA-only context equivalent to Canadian Cordillera (which should be merged) but the English usage "Western Cordillera" is North American/continental-only, despite Cordillera Occidental having the same meaning, but also variable applications even in Spanish. I just googled Cordillera americano with interesting results, some of which may be useful as citations for this article. Oppose per above, and because each sub-unit of the broader American Cordillera is geologically distinct due to the subduction of different plates, and these ranges therefore have important discontinuities between them. Oppose - the Pacific Coast Ranges are only a subrange of the Western System or Coastal System or the Western Cordillera (North America) which are themselves only a subset of the American Cordillera (see above), which also includes the mountain spine of Central America (which may not be part of the Western Cordillera, that I'm not sure of but it doesn't seem so). The American Cordillera extends from Tierra del Fuego to the Aleutian Islands; the Pacific Coast Ranges only from California to the BC/Yukon/Alaska border area.Skookum1 (talk) 17:45, 24 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose - Pacific Cordillera in its proper Canadian usage is an alternate usage for Canadian Cordillera, which is really only the Canadian name for the Canadian portion of the Western Cordillera (North America). It is also sometimes used, as in bivouac.com, as a synonym for the Pacific Coast Ranges, which are only a part of the other usage. I don't know where German wiki got them from, but it's scarcely a valid source; and not accurate; the coords given are in the area of the Peru-Chile border, I suppose that would b e the midpoint of the South American portion fo the Cordillera; the actual midpoint is somewhere up around the Istmo de Tehuantepec, no?Skookum1 (talk) 13:57, 16 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The current coordinates correspond to Aconcagua, the highest point in the chain. It's fairly common for articles on mountain ranges to use the coordinate of the highest point. (I'm not saying it's good practice, just that it's not unusual.) --Stepheng3 (talk) 19:35, 16 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

For North America, I used info in North American Cordillera (particularly the map) and analyzed info regarding the Central American ranges. the list of countries in the info box omits all Central American countries with shaded areas in the map. Why?
