Algernon Sydney → Algernon Sidney — The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography and the biographies of Sidney printed by the Cambridge University Press and the Princeton University Press (amongst others) used an 'i' instead of a 'y' in Algernon's second name. This is an apparent Christianised adaptation of the quotation by the ancient Greek writer Aesop: "The gods help those who help themselves".Cloptonson (talk) 05:44, 8 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Involved in 'plotting'?

Where is the evidence for this please? It directly contradicts both Maurice Ashley and John "J.H." Plumb, who both state that he was innocent of any active plotting. His arraignment following the discovery of the Rye House Plot was for papers found in his desk which outlined and ideal Commonwealth Republic in the abstract ideal rather than as an active plotter with Shaftesbury. There is NO valid evidence for a such a statement and most authors of the last two centuries (Dasent, Scott, Arthur, Lamford, Gilbert, etc.) have argued that it was NOT true. Their basis was that at the time claimed Algernon was serving with Cromwell's Army of Saints in Ireland and unavailable to be buying, selling, or in any way contracting or contacting anyone not in Ireland [source:Private Life of Charles II by A.I. Dasent,(1927)p.38 note 1]. Further, Lucy Walter was 8 years old when she first moved to London (which is when the slander said the laison took place)according to House of Lords' Records of May 26,1641 and the 1640 Notebook of St. Martin-in-the Fields Church Records in London. The assertion that it was true originated with Macpherson's writtings whose source, verbal from James II, has long been recognized as a hoax like his Ossian hoax. Second Period as MP - Omissions

It is mentioned Sidney, earlier in Long Parliament MP for Cardiff, was 'taking up his seat in the Commons' in 1659. The article on Cardiff constituency does not mention him as MP during the late Commonwealth and Restoration years, so it must have been for another seat. Where was the constituency and how long did he represent it?Cloptonson (talk) 13:40, 8 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
