Barter??

can anyone substantiate when ancient rome had a "barter" economy? Otherwise "gradual transition from bartering" should be removed as baseless. The barter theory of money has been widely debunked and the assumption that that myth is true is the only basis I can think of for this otherwise bizarre claim.
