Hoax ?

Marked as a possible hoax - but there is probably simply confusion about spelling.

Spelling

The ASC Ms C for 924 says

“

Her Eadweard cing gefor on Myrcum æt Fearndune, 7 Ælfweard his sunu swiþe hraþe þæs gefor on Oxnaforda, 7 heora lic licgað on Wintanceastre. 7 Æþestan wæs of Myrcum gecoren to cinge 7 æt Cingestune gehalgod.

The trusty Blackwell Encyclopedia of Anglo-Saxon England says (under Æthelstan)

“

His father, Edward the Elder, died in July 924. Edward's son and Æthelstan's half-brother Ælfweard succeeded, but died within a month.

”
