Sylhet District Bar Association

The Sylhet District Bar Association is an organization composed of lawyers practicing in the courts of district judges, session judges, magistrates, and various tribunals in the Sylhet district, established under the Civil Courts Act, the Code of Criminal Procedure, and other special laws. The bar association is regulated by the Bangladesh Bar Council Order.[1] Members of this association have gone on to become the Chief Justice of Bangladesh, members of the National Parliament of Bangladesh, and members of the Assam Parliament. They played a significant role in the movement for independence from the British Empire and in the Liberation War against Pakistan.
History
While specific details about the establishment of the Sylhet District Bar Association are not available, its existence can be traced back to the 1860s and 1870s through the biography of Bipin Chandra Pal, whose father joined the Sylhet Bar as a lawyer in 1865-66.[2] During that period, the lawyers of the Sylhet District Bar maintained the highest standards of etiquette and professionalism, which upheld the purity and integrity of the criminal justice system and helped ensure the independence of the judiciary from the executive.[2]
