• 1836 – Louisa Railroad incorporated in Virginia.
• 1868 – Manningham station opens on the Midland Railway north of Bradford, West Yorkshire, England.
• 1869 – Henry Keyes succeeds Henry C. Lord as president of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway.
• 1871 – William J. Palmer announces that the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad will be built using 3 ft (914 mm) gauge tracks.
• 1881 – The first train operates between Norwood, Ohio, and Lebanon, Ohio, on the Cincinnati Northern Railway.
• 1885 – The Southern Pacific Railroad and Central Pacific Railroad are combined under a single holding company, the Southern Pacific Company.

Debut of the Blue Comet at Red Bank station in 1929.

• 1929 – Central Railroad of New Jersey debuts the Blue Comet passenger train before its launch in regular service in New Jersey.
• 1950 – Rockville Centre, New York, United States: a head-on collision between two Long Island Rail Road commuter trains kills 32 and injures 158.
• 1961 – Application for a merger between the Great Northern, Northern Pacific and Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroads made to the ICC.

• 2009 – The international connection between Perpignan, Roussillon, France, and Figueres, Catalonia, Spain, through the Perthus Tunnel on the Perpignan–Barcelona high-speed rail line is officially opened.
