60°21′N 29°25′E / 60.350°N 29.417°E Pobeda (Russian: Побе́да; Finnish: Kanneljärvi) is a rural locality on Karelian Isthmus, in Vyborgsky District of Leningrad Oblast, served by the station Kanneljärvi of the Saint Petersburg–Vyborg railroad. Until the Winter War and Continuation War, it had been the administrative center of the Kanneljärvi municipality of the Viipuri province of Finland.
Name
Pobeda's name has some possible origins:
- Побе́да is the Russian word for "victory".
- It could also mean "a settlement on a hill" based off the sand hill nearby.[1]
- The Finnish pronunciation of Kanneljärvi sounds like the Swedish skante, meaning "dry, skinny hill".[1]
History
For about 480 years, Pobeda belonged to Finland, particularly Äyräpää. After World War I however, Pobeda and surrounding villages were merged into the RSFSR, causing complaints.[1]
