"My Oh My" is a song by Australian singer Kylie Minogue, featuring American artist Bebe Rexha and Swedish singer-songwriter Tove Lo. It was first released on 11 July 2024 by BMG through streaming platforms, and further distributed a day later on physical and digital outlets. The song was written by Ina Wroldsen and Lo, with Steve Mac co-writing and producing.

"My Oh My" marks Minogue's third consecutive collaborative work, following "Midnight Ride" with Orville Peck and Diplo and "Dance Alone" with Sia, as well as her second collaboration with Lo and first with Rexha. Musically, it is a dance-pop track with elements of club music. Lyrically, it discusses flirtation, with each singer using their astrological sign throughout the lyrics to introduce themselves in a playful manner to a potential lover.

Music critics praised the song's dance-oriented sound, catchiness, and collaborative efforts of both Rexha and Lo. Some reviewers drew comparisons to Minogue's previous single "Can't Get You Out of My Head" (2001). A music visualizer was published on Minogue's YouTube channel a day before its digital release.

Background

On 22 September 2023, Minogue released her sixteenth studio album, Tension.[1] It debuted to critical and commercial success, and featured her singles "Padam Padam", "Tension" and "Hold On to Now", which the first of the three was a sleeper hit.[a] To promote the album, she made several live appearances before beginning her More Than Just a Residency at the Voltaire in Las Vegas on 3 November that year.[6] Variety confirmed in January 2024 that Minogue would repackage Tension with additional material, and Minogue hinted at working on new music at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards in February.[7][8] On 8 July, she announced new material on social media with a pre-save link titled "MOM".[9] Later, she and singers Bebe Rexha and Tove Lo shared separate social media posts with similar descriptions of one another.[10] On 11 July, Minogue announced the single "My Oh My" (originally abbreviated as "MOM") on social media, and was first released that day on streaming platforms.[11]

Development and composition

"My Oh My" is Minogue's second collaboration with Swedish singer-songwriter Tove Lo (pictured).

"My Oh My" was written by Ina Wroldsen and Lo, with Steve Mac co-writing and producing.[12] The song features vocals from Minogue, Rexha, and Lo, and is Minogue's third consecutive collaboration after "Midnight Ride" with Orville Peck and Diplo and "Dance Alone" with Sia.[13][14] Minogue previously collaborated with Lo on her single "Really Don't Like U" for Lo's album Sunshine Kitty (2019), and this is Minogue and Rexha's first collaboration, though they met at the Billboard Women in Music Awards on 7 March 2024.[15][16]

Musically, "My Oh My" is a dance-pop song with elements of club music, and has a tempo of 124 beats per minute (BPM).[17] Murray Chalmer's press release identified the song's "nod to the unmistakable Kylie 'la la la' refrain, a thumping bass line" and "playful lyrics", later adding that it is "destined to be a summer dance floor favourite".[18] Billboard said the song "lifts a few notches with its slappy, ready-for-the-club beat", while Rolling Stone writer Daniel Kreps called it a "dance-floor ready dance-pop track".[19][20] Variety editor Thania Garcia noted the "thumping and dance floor-ready beat" and "playful deliveries" over a "irresistible pop rhythm".[21] Jessica Lynch of Rolling Stone Australia wrote that the song "features Kylie's signature 'la la la' hooks, a catchy bassline, and playful lyrics that make it an instant dance floor anthem".[22]

Lyrically, the song touches on the topic of flirtation, with the lyrics "When you asked/What's your name?/What's your sign?/I'm Kylie, it's Gemini/What's your drink?/Let me buy/You had me when you said hi" as an example.[19] Throughout the song, the three artists incorporate their astrological signs: Gemini (Minogue), Virgo (Rexha) and Scorpio (Lo).[22] Mary Varvaris of The Music elaborated on its application, writing that it "has a banging bass line and playful lyrics about star signs".[23] NME writer Elizabeth Aubrey and Attitude editor Jamie Tabberer noted the repetition of the lyric "La la la", and compared it to its use on Minogue's single "Can't Get You Out of My Head" (2001).[24][25]

Release and critical reception

"My Oh My" was first teased on Minogue, Rexha, and Lo's respective social media accounts.[10] It was first available on streaming platforms on 11 July, and then on digital platforms the next day.[12][26] It premiered on The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show on BBC Radio 2, and further appeared on the BBC Radio Shropshire that same day.[27][28] Additionally, a visualiser was also added to Minogue's YouTube channel.[29] On 12 July, Minogue's website distributed three physical versions of the single: a CD single, a cassette tape, and a 7-inch vinyl record, all of which included an extended version of the track.[30][31][32] The vinyl will be distributed on 9 August 2024.[33][34]

Music critics gave the single positive reviews. Billboard writer Lars Brandle described the track as a "sophisticated and polished shot of pop", while Clash editor Robin Murray called it a "fun, frisky pop belter, a song that exudes femme energy from first note to last".[19][35] Murray praised Rexha and Lo's work on the song, calling it a "track that feels camp, contagious, and totally thrilling".[35] Stereogum contributor Abby Jones described it as a "classic lust-on-the-dance-floor tune".[36] Classic Pop editor Dan Biggane wrote that the song is "destined to be a summer dance floor favourite", while The Standard writer Nuray Bulbul praised its "enticing pop beat" with "lighthearted rhymes about their zodiac signs".[37][38] Euphoria contributor Nmesoma Okechukwu described the song as a "hot dance track" after praising its catchiness and each of the singer's delivery, and Kitty Robison of Notion called the song "electrifying".[39]

People called it a "catchy, flirtatious pop banger", and praised the singer's lyrical node to "Can't Get You Out of My Head", whereas Taylor Henderson of Out highlighted it as a "glitzy pop-dance song that will surely give the gays everything they want".[40][41] Paper editor Shaad D'Souza listed it on their 10 Songs You Need To Hear list, and described it as "charming and unapologetically silly," as well as a "perfect late-summer confection".[42] The Times included the song on their list of the best songs of 2024, while Pip Ellwood-Hughes of Entertainment Focus chose it as one of the songs they expected to hear during Minogue's appearance at BST Hyde Park on 13 July.[43][44]
