Roger Williams lists all three colors (blue, gold and white) as official school colors. Salve Regina lists their secondary color as white with black used for accents. Tufts lists their primary color as 'Tufts Blue' though I've seen their athletic logo used interchangeably with either blue or brown so I'm not sure which way it should be. I've changed the first two in the sandbox and left Tufts alone. I've also fixed an error with UMass Boston from the earlier edit (switched colors 2 and 3). Everything else looks good. PensRule11385 (talk) 17:36, 11 December 2018 (UTC)
Done. I'm pretty sure I checked Tufts against the cited source. – Jonesey95 (talk) 17:49, 11 December 2018 (UTC)

Lubbock Christian colors

Could someone please update the colors for the Lubbock Christian Chaparrals? I'm making a template for the school and have noticed that the colors are out of date. Red is no longer the preferred accent per the 2017 style guide, which can be found on page 2 of this document https://lcu.edu/flexPaper/LCUStyleGuide_May2017/

Please change Pittsburgh Panthers (line 699) from name1="Royal Blue" to name1="Blue".

Explanation: the term "royal blue" is a generic, unofficial descriptor of a new primary color palette being implemented for athletics. The new shades have technically been developed by Nike as unique "Pitt Royal" and "Pitt Gold" palettes. However, the names "royal blue", "Pitt Royal", or "Pitt Gold" are not the names that the university or its athletic department uses for the school's or teams' colors. Historically, and continuing currently, the colors are simply named or referred to as "Blue and Gold" in all manner of official and non-official capacity (i.e. "Blue and Gold Society", "Blue and Gold Days", "Blue and Gold" spring football game, "Blue" athletic giving levels, fight songs lyrics employing "Blue and Gold", athletic paraphernalia, etc). Therefore, color names employed should read "Blue" and "Gold". CrazyPaco (talk) 16:36, 15 April 2019 (UTC) CrazyPaco (talk) 16:36, 15 April 2019 (UTC)

  • Make sure the sandbox is a match for the live template before starting work (it wasn't);
  • If you're going to provide a line of code, provide the whole line rather than omitting the final comma; and
  • Be very careful about your conflict of interest, though requests on talk pages like this are fine. Happy editing, Cabayi (talk) 12:59, 19 April 2019 (UTC)

Performance

Is there a better way to structure /data so it doesn't have to load a 1100-line 240k database every time (ie. page load)? It should be possible to split it alphabetically, as one idea, or even into 4 files. -- GreenC 14:35, 20 April 2019 (UTC)

Can you link an article where performance issues can be seen? I'm not trying to be smart with that request as I share the sentiment. What I mean is that I would have a look at the issue if there were a page somewhere I could use to test what's going on. Johnuniq (talk) 00:02, 21 April 2019 (UTC)

The Georgia Tech secondary color (black #000000) does not appear on the referenced source (https://ramblinwreck.com/georgia-tech-athletics-brand-guidelines/). The source is appropriate. The secondary color, replacing #000000, is white (#FFFFFF). If for some reason unbeknownst to me white is not an acceptable color for clarity/formatting reasons, dark grey (#545454) or light grey (#E5E5E5) should be used (preferably dark grey). All of this correction is found on the reference currently in the template.

It has been reverted by Corkythehornetfan. Which talk page are you talking about Corkythehornetfan? Dreamy Jazz 🎷 talk to me | my contributions 23:02, 28 May 2019 (UTC)
Iwentdwarfing and Dreamy Jazz you gotta give me a minute to write! I’m on my mobile device 😊
the reason we’re using “black” is because white on Tech Gold is not compliant, meaning it’s hard for those who are visually impaired can’t read it. Black is only used for the font, as the navy blue is the border color. Tech athletics does not use “Buzz Gold” as they moved to Tech gold for everything this past year, which is why we don’t use the university website brand guide.
545454 is not compliant, and neither is #E5E5E5. That’s why we use black font. Hope that helps. Corky 23:08, 28 May 2019 (UTC)
Corkythehornetfan, Ok. Makes sense. I'll leave this edit request for you or another person, as I am unsure about grey.
On a side note, same with me with mobile. Half the time I try to visit a diff on my watchlist and my phone thinks it knows better and clicks on a completely different link... Thanks and happy editing, Dreamy Jazz 🎷 talk to me | my contributions 23:14, 28 May 2019 (UTC)
I hear ya there! Dang my fat fingers! As for this module, we have evolved over the past couple of years and started doing contrast compliance a couple of years ago. It’s a learning experience, and though everyone wants their schools colors used, we have to add other colors to make sure sure everyone can read them. In cases like GA Tech, we make sure to only include non-school brand colors as font and not the actual backgrounds or borders. Corky 07:00, 29 May 2019 (UTC)

Please correct the data for Oregon State University to conform to the official media and branding guidelines as of the most recent update in April 2017. When you go to the BYU Cougars Wikipedia page in the information box the color Royal Blue needs to be added to their colors. In the University’s brand guide they have added Royal Blue to go with Navy Blue and White. Also their uniforms have been either blue, white or royal blue. So Royal Blue just needs to be added to BYU Cougars. Colors = Navy blue, white, and royal blue[1][2]

There is a note in the documentation that edits are done at Module:College color/data. I think the sequence should be that a proposal to change the colors is added at Talk:BYU Cougars, then the module is updated if agreed, or if there is no disagreement after, say, three days. Please re-activate the edit request then. The article (BYU Cougars) shows two colors with the same reference given above for three so a discussion should occur first. The big problem is that this only produces colours with initial capitals, e.g. "Navy Blue, Emerald Green and White" rather than "Navy blue, emerald green and white". Emeraude (talk) 10:47, 22 March 2020 (UTC)

Of note, the reference link hasn't changed (SFU has updated the page following the 2019 rebrand). Additionally, the athletics teams only use "light red" and not "dark red" that is used by the school itself.

@Corkythehornetfan: or @Charlesaaronthompson: Hi, I notice you are main contributors of Module:College color/data. If you have a moment, either of you two, can you please have a look at the above edit request? Apologies for the urgency, because I am working for non-US CBB templates that depend on this module for college colors. Thanks. – McVahl (talk) 16:51, 2 June 2020 (UTC)
@McVahl: I'll add these to the module this afternoon. For those that don't have a brand guide as a source, how did you obtain the color codes? Corky 18:11, 2 June 2020 (UTC)
@Corkythehornetfan: Thanks for your response. For teams without brand guide, my assumption is to obtain the color codes from the universities' official logo. There are also colors indicated here in form of icon: in University Athletic Association of the Philippines#Member schools article. Though I'm not sure if I could align the color codes from those icons to this module because some of them do not match. – McVahl (talk) 18:19, 2 June 2020 (UTC)
@McVahl: Thanks. From the wikilink you listed, I wouldn't go off of those color codes since we don't know where the editor who placed it there obtained them from (looks like they were added in/around 2017).
I've gone ahead and added the above. Please keep in mind that colors will need a font color which is usually either black or white (light colors use black, bold colors use white). I use this website to check which will need what font color. This is used for the font to make it compliant with Wikipedia guidelines. I added the white for "UP Fighting Maroons" and I had to add black font for "UST Growling Tigers" because white font isn't compliant with the gold background. Also, we don't need quotes in the references, we just need the url, title, date, and accessdate. Corky 22:23, 2 June 2020 (UTC)
@Corkythehornetfan: Thanks. I tested the changes in Template:UAAP color cell/sandbox. However, the secondary colors for "UST Growling Tigers" aren't working after the amendment. The initial color arrangement, "FCBF15", "FFFFFF", "231F20", was OK in my previous test. – McVahl (talk) 03:43, 3 June 2020 (UTC)
@McVahl: Where are they not working? I think I know what the problem is... Corky 05:48, 3 June 2020 (UTC)
@Corkythehornetfan: There are test results in the given sandbox page. If you will notice, UST cell colors are same for both primary and secondary results. Secondary cell is expected to be white foreground in a neutral black background. – McVahl (talk) 05:59, 3 June 2020 (UTC)
@McVahl: Should be fixed now, sorry for the delayed response. You may need to purge your page by adding ?action=purge at the end of the page url in the sandbox to see the update. Corky 07:13, 16 June 2020 (UTC)

I made an edit request to add many lines to the module in January and added them to the sandbox in March (as requested), however no action appears to have been taken afterwards (Module talk:College color/Archive 2#Template-protected edit request on 31 January 2020). I just wanted to check if there was a hold up or oversight, or if I missed something on my end. PensRule11385 (talk) 03:34, 30 July 2020 (UTC)

That's a massive change and would need consideration by someone with an understanding of the topic. You might not have changed the edit request to answered=no so the person who answered the first time might not have noticed your reply. Do you know if there is a test page that would show the result of the changes? Johnuniq (talk) 03:51, 30 July 2020 (UTC)

Proposal: Migrate to Wikidata

Hi, I'd like to propose that we migrate all of the data in this module to Wikidata using the official color (P6364) property, and then update this module to retrieve data from Wikidata instead of from Module:College color/data. For an example of how this would look, I've added color data to Cincinnati Bearcats (Q2892868), which you can see here: wikidata:Q2892868#P6364.

The major benefit of this migration is that it would enable collaboration with other wikis. This color data is only usable on English Wikipedia right now; any other wiki must maintain their own local version of it. With the data in Wikidata, everyone would have access the data with the same ease, and updates would be shared by all wikis. Additionally, the color data would also be easily available to anyone else making use of the Wikidata API.

Additionally, this migration will enable anyone to update the color data, which means it will likely be kept more up-to-date as there is no need to make an edit request. You might worry that this would lead to inaccurate color data being added. However, it is very easy to monitor changes to the data to verify or revert them; e.g. here's a feed of college sports clubs, sorted by "dateModified" for the "official color" claim. We can also enforce tight controls using Wikidata's property constraints; e.g. here's a query that finds claims which violate the "citation needed constraint".

After the migration, the templates would work pretty much the same. You would still be able to call the template using the name of the team, and it'd return more or less the same results. I can migrate the existing data (including the citations) automatically, so besides a bit of testing, this shouldn't require much community effort.

That's my proposal; what do you all think? –IagoQnsi (talk) 02:14, 11 August 2020 (UTC)

That's an interesting idea but there are 1140 entries and while you have shown a query to list changes, monitoring that would be a pain and unlikely to happen. I'm ambivalent about Wikidata (although that changes to antagonistic when discussing its absurd API) but regardless of that there has been a lot of pushback against having articles reliant on Wikidata here. Another possibility would be for GreenC to work some magic and put a central list at Commons using its structured data. For example, {{Wikipedia rank by size}} uses that procedure although it's more complex because GreenC has to run a bot to keep the central data updated—for college colors, there would be manual edits and no bot. The point of Commons, is that people could watch one page to monitor all changes. Johnuniq (talk) 02:34, 11 August 2020 (UTC)
@Johnuniq: If you want just one page to monitor, wikidata:Wikidata:Database reports/Constraint violations/P6364 is an option. You could also create a page here on enwiki using Template:Wikidata list with my SPARQL query (or a similar one), and then ListeriaBot would keep it updated so you could add it to your watchlist. –IagoQnsi (talk) 03:11, 11 August 2020 (UTC)
IagoQnsi is correct about centralizing the data so it can be maintained in a single location for all projects. There are two methods, Wikidata, and Commons Tabular. Each has pros and cons. I wrote about Commons Tabular at User:GreenC/software/tabular. Tabular is easy for editors to understand being a single JSON file and GUI. Example. There are no new concepts, terms, or interfaces, it looks like a table that can be edited, similar to the current /data file. I'm not vested in this template but generally my preference is the easy path unless more powerful tools are needed, which add additional features and complexity. I can confirm the data here is a good fit for Tabular being not too large. Unless there is some reason to maintain it on Wikidata. -- GreenC 03:52, 11 August 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for those clarifications. I'm neutral about what happens with the data; the reason I'm here is that I fixed some Lua code. Module:College color/data has 104,683 transclusions and is edited frequently (two recent contributors are Charlesaaronthompson and Corkythehornetfan). Whatever happens would be a big change and should be discussed widely first, more than just here (perhaps a notice at Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals) would be enough). Johnuniq (talk) 05:04, 11 August 2020 (UTC)
My main reason for preferring Wikidata over a tabular file is that it allows for future expansion. My hope is that Module:Sports color and Module:Gridiron color would also be imported into the same standard schema on Wikidata, and that eventually we'd have a standardized way to retrieve a color palette for any team in any sport (which is not realistically doable with a tabular file). Having the colors in Wikidata also increases discoverability — it is much more likely that someone discovers the official color (P6364) property if it starts appearing on thousands of items than it is likely that someone discovers a tabular file on Commons.
To me, this color data seems like a prime candidate for Wikidata because it is already structured in a way that fits extremely well into Wikidata. Wikidata is primarily based around linking to Wikipedia articles, and this color data is already keyed on article titles. (Side note: One more benefit of using Wikidata is that we'd no longer have to maintain a list of aliases for each team – we could instead utilize existing labels on Wikidata items.) Editing the colors in their current Lua-based format already requires a little bit of tech savvy, so I imagine Wikidata wouldn't be too difficult to adapt for most. I think there's a lot of value to the broader Wikimedia community in putting this data on Wikidata instead of a tabular file. –IagoQnsi (talk) 07:30, 11 August 2020 (UTC)
Another case of... “Hey we could use Wikidata to do this thing that we already do well”... no thanks. I have no confidence that Wikidata won’t screw it up (as they have so often).
If Wikidata wants to take something WP.en has done and export it over there, they are welcome to do so... but I object to using Wikidata to import stuff into WP.en... it inevitably causes problems. Blueboar (talk) 21:57, 11 August 2020 (UTC)
@Blueboar: What problems did you discover with {{Infobox telescope}}, which is able to draw all of its information from Wikidata? --RexxS (talk) 22:16, 11 August 2020 (UTC)
I have never explored that template, so I have no idea. It may not have any problems importing stuff from Wikidata... But the fact that I don’t know of problems does not mean there are none.
To be honest, my negativity towards importing information from WD may have little direct connection with what you are proposing here. The problem is that we have had so MANY issues with WD importing info that I am now very wary of using WD at all. I simply do not trust Wikidata to be free of vandalism, with accurate information that is sourced to reliable sources. And when we already have a way of doing things that I do trust, I see no reason to switch to WD for other things. Blueboar (talk) 23:31, 11 August 2020 (UTC)
I understand your position, and I believe that it's important to ensure the quality and ease of use of our content. For every active editor on Wikidata, there are 3660 articles; for every active editor on Wikipedia, there are 48 articles. It's harder to patrol vandalism on Wikidata, and the best way to improve that is to engage the resource of Wikipedia editors who are wiling to help out. In return, that means we don't want to see unsourced content appearing in our articles, nor content that can't be quickly fixed if vandalised. Infoboxes like {{Infobox telescope}} attempt to meet those needs by filtering out any unsourced information (and that includes data sourced just to another wiki project), and by providing a quick link to enable editors to fix mistakes and vandalism. It also ensures that any field drawn from Wikidata can be simply overridden by supplying a local value.
What I want to encourage is proposals like this addressing the hard questions such as "Can we ensure the data is verifiable?", "Can we make sure that it's easy to spot and revert vandalism, and correct mistakes?", and "Can we substitute a local value for the Wikidata one, in a given article if consensus finds it preferable?" Everyone can help by demanding that information drawn from Wikidata doesn't fall below the standards we expect for our content. --RexxS (talk) 00:04, 12 August 2020 (UTC)
Problems with that template / reliance on Wikidata? See e.g. Greenwich 28 inch refractor, which lists the name of the telescope as "Royal Observatory Former Great Equatorial Building" and the type of telescope as "building". (Oh, and the typical Wikidata locations like "Royal Borough of Greenwich, Greater London, London, England": see also Plateau de Bure Interferometer, location "Grenoble, canton of Grenoble-5, arrondissement of Grenoble, Isère, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France"). The C. Donald Shane telescope has an "alternative name" identical to the real name.
Basically, compare the Wikidata version of Thirty Meter Telescope with the actual; non-Wikidata version: [1] vs. [2]. It's immediately clear which one is superior in all aspects. Fram (talk) 08:01, 12 August 2020 (UTC)
I saw Fram's edits to the TMT article and subsequently found this page. On the topic of migrating this to Wikidata, I'd support that - Module:College color/data is an awful way to store data, it's much better to use Wikidata for that. On Fram's comments, the enwp infobox at Thirty Metre Telescope is outdated and quite possibly completely wrong as the telescope might not even be built in Hawaii (to be decided next year), so I've been staying away from that article. If you want to cherry-pick examples to look at, see South Pole Telescope before and after, or the Sardinia Radio Telescope. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 09:13, 12 August 2020 (UTC)
Talking about the telescope articles is a distraction because they deal with a significant variety of formats and details. The proposal here concerns colors used for sporting teams which are completely regular and without the complexities that arise with the properties for telescopes. Johnuniq (talk) 11:05, 12 August 2020 (UTC)
It is a distraction, but it is at the same time a cautionary tale about relying too much on Wikidata. Mike Peel cherry-picks two examples, and looking at the second one, Sardinia Radio Telescope, I see the Wikidata-generated location "San Basilio, Province of Cagliari, Sardinia, Italy, Southern Europe, Europe, Northern Hemisphere". That's what you get when you automate such things. Fram (talk) 09:13, 13 August 2020 (UTC)
Hmm, actually that's a bug, it should stop after 'Italy'. @RexxS: as well as stopping at instance of (P31)=country (Q6256), could the 'location' function of WikidataIB also stop when it encounters sovereign state (Q3624078) please? Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 19:41, 13 August 2020 (UTC)
It could, but the bug is that Wikidata doesn't consider Italy a country. Maybe we should be fixing that before applying patches to work around the problem? --RexxS (talk) 21:28, 13 August 2020 (UTC)
This is getting more off topic, so I'll just comment that I've followed this up at d:Wikidata:Project_chat#Countries_vs._sovereign_states if anyone's interested. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 10:47, 15 August 2020 (UTC)

Putting data in Wikidata sounds good but it would spread the colors over 1140 pages rather than the current one. That is a maintenance nightmare, even if there were no vandalism or misguided edits. The module documentation has a handy table showing all the team names, colors and references. Presumably people who understand the topic can use that to check the results. Without a central list (the current module), you wouldn't even know what team names are available. Johnuniq (talk) 11:05, 12 August 2020 (UTC)

@Johnuniq: I think the proposer already answered this in their third paragraph - it's easy to auto-generate that list, and to do a whole host of other checks via queries and constraint violations. We could use {{Wikidata list}} to maintain a local copy of it here if that would help. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 19:54, 12 August 2020 (UTC)
@IagoQnsi: How do you propose storing the 794 citation templates in Module:College color/data on Wikidata? --RexxS (talk) 23:14, 13 August 2020 (UTC)

It looks like the !vote about this has moved to Wikipedia:Village_pump_(proposals)#Migrate_college_color_data_to_Wikidata. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 19:43, 13 August 2020 (UTC)

It's apparent the RfC has no chance of success and it should be closed sooner than later. I think the original suggestion by User:Johnuniq of Commons Tabular remains viable, such that wikis benefit from a centrally located definition. If Enwiki is still unwilling to part from a local file, there are a couple options. First idea would be a bot that reads the Lua data file and converts it to JSON and uploads to Commons whenever there is a change - the Lua module can read from Commons or the local Lua data file based on a cfg switch, and this updated lua module is rolled out to other wikis. Second idea would be one time convert the Lua data file to JSON and host it on Enwiki, and a bot copies this to Commons whenever there is a change. Both of these solutions maintain Enwiki as the authority source, and allows other wikis to benefit from our work maintaining data accuracy. -- GreenC 18:00, 18 August 2020 (UTC)

Could someone edit the second color under "Wesleyan Cardinals" from #101820 to #000000? Same source, must have just been wrongly input the first time around. Conifer (talk)

Also update the third color under "Oberlin Yeomen" from #FFB81D to #FFC72C per [3]. Conifer (talk) 22:45, 28 August 2020 (UTC)

One more: Amherst Mammoths from #332064 to #3F1F69 per [4]. Conifer (talk) 23:08, 28 August 2020 (UTC)

Is there a wikiproject with active participants who might confirm these changes (and in the previous section)? Another opinion from someone who understands the issues would help make sure we're not overlooking something. Johnuniq (talk) 23:18, 28 August 2020 (UTC)
I'm not sure to be honest. The WikiProjects linked at the top of the page are all for college sports, which probably won't be helpful for confirming the colors of D3 liberal arts colleges. (By the way, the yellow for the Williams Ephs should be changed from #FFD100 to #FDCC09 per [5].) Conifer (talk) 00:03, 29 August 2020 (UTC)

Tennessee's colors are Orange, white, and "smokey".[6] Our table has orange, black, and "smokey". Radford University's primary color is red. Other colors of their primary palette are dark gray, light gray, and white.Page 20 of their content guide. Our table has blue as their color #3, but that's part of their secondary or "accent" color palette - it's not one of their main colors at all. Is there any reason for these colors the way they are or is it a mistake? --B (talk) 20:54, 26 August 2020 (UTC)

@B: Sorry for the late response. The colors used here are based off of two things: (1) The school colors from the Athletics media guides and (2) whatever is compliant with our contrast guidelines. We need to make sure they're readable for everyone (including those who may be colorblind). For Tennessee, neither white or "Smokey" font colors on an orange background are readable so we have to make it black font. I went ahead and removed "Smokey" as the border color because Tennessee's primary colors are Orange and White and we don't use this with Univ. of Alabama who uses silver as a third color. As for Radford, that was more than likely a mistake. The Radford men's basketball 2019–20 quick facts guide" doesn't include blue so I replaced that with gray. Maybe at one time they did use blue, but I dunno. Hope that helps... Corky 03:33, 1 September 2020 (UTC)

Contrast and color order

@Corkythehornetfan: The documentation for this module talks about color contrast in general, but not about any pairing in particular, and the test table shows the contrast for all possible pairings. Given that you mentioned contrast when you switched the order of the colors, is it the case that the contrast between 1 and 2 is more important than the contrast between 1 and 3? The documentation doesn't currently make this clear. Jackmcbarn (talk) 02:14, 24 September 2020 (UTC)

@Jackmcbarn: Yes, for the purposes of the navboxes, 1 is the background and 2 is the font color, making contrast more important for those two fields than 1 and 3. Field 3 is going be the “border” on the navboxes, which we should consider contrast but it’s not as high of a priority as fields 1 and 2. Hope that makes sense? Corky 22:18, 26 September 2020 (UTC)
