Megan Ann Moroney (born October 9, 1997) is an American country music singer from Douglasville, Georgia. She charted her first single, "Tennessee Orange", in 2022. Her debut album Lucky was released in May 2023, reaching the top 40 of the Billboard 200.[2]

Biography

Moroney was born October 9, 1997, in Savannah, Georgia.[1][3][4]

She began listening to country music in her childhood and learned to play piano. Moroney went to Robert S. Alexander High School and participated in theater. While attending the University of Georgia, she opened at a concert for Chase Rice, as well as interned for Kristian Bush of Sugarland. Megan now writes/co-writes all of her own music.[5] At the university, she was in the Kappa Delta sorority.[2] After completing her degree, she moved to Nashville, Tennessee, in 2020 to begin a music career. She kept in contact with Bush, which led to him introducing her to other songwriters. She released her first single "Wonder" in 2021, which in turn led to her releasing an extended play titled Pistol Made of Roses. Her next single release was "Tennessee Orange" in 2022, a track on which Bush served as producer.[1]

After the song's release, Moroney received attention on social media for wearing a Tennessee Volunteers shirt belonging to Morgan Wallen; it led to rumors that she was dating him, but Moroney remained neutral when asked if the two were in a relationship. After the song became popular through online streaming, Moroney signed with Arista Nashville.[6]

In late 2022, "Tennessee Orange" debuted at number 94 on the Billboard Hot 100, giving Moroney her first chart entry. At the time, the song also charted on Billboard Hot Country Songs and Country Airplay.[7] Arista Nashville closed while the song was climbing the charts, and as a result, Moroney was transferred to Columbia Records Nashville.[8]

On May 5, 2023, Moroney released her debut album Lucky.[9] The album featured the singles "Tennessee Orange" and "I'm Not Pretty". The album reached the top 40 of Billboard 200. The album was named as the Best Country and American album of 2023 by the Rolling Stone with writer Jonathan Bernstein saying the Moroney created a 'casual, youth-conversant tone makes it shine and comes naturally'.[10] A deluxe version of the album was released on the 22nd of September.[11]

Moroney released a cover version of Chris Stapleton's 2013 single "What Are You Listening To?" as an Amazon Music exclusive on October 6, 2023.[12] The song was released on other streaming platforms in January 2024.

Since then, she has released a song with Old Dominion titled "Can't Break Up Now," a single "No Caller ID," and the Deluxe version of her debut album Lucky.

Moroney's songs and their meanings

Most of the songs Moroney writes are inspired by her self-proclaimed bad taste in men. She mixes hopeless romantic feelings with sarcastic wit and girly charm. Megan or Me-Mo (May-Mo) as her fans call her is an inspiration for a new version of country where she switches between bad bitch and emo cowgirl eras.[13]

  1. "I'm Not Pretty" - This song deals with the classic girl jealousy. Megan's ex-boyfriend gets a new girlfriend who goes through her Insta posts and accidentally likes a picture. Megan fires back in her head talking about how the other girl must be jealous of her and how she talks.[13]
  2. "Tennessee Orange" - Megan dives deep into her Georgia roots. Explaining her newfound romance with a man who treats her right but he cheers for Tennessee. She still wants her team to win but she is willing o cheer for Tennessee for him.[13]
  3. "Girl in the Mirror" - This song is about loving yourself more than a man. She finds herself wondering who the girl in the mirror is anymore. Unsure of who she has become since she met 'him'.[13]
  4. "Hair Salon" - In this song, we are taken to Megan's hair salon where she is informed of all the latest gossip. But she wishes she never heard it when she finds out one of her exes is engaged to someone new.[13]
  5. "Nothin' Crazy" (feat. Mackenzie Carpenter) - This song is about a guy who is sick and tired of crazy, obsessive exes. He just wants one that is normal, and she reassures him she is. While behind his back she is planning their future on Pinterest and calling his Mom.[13]
  6. "Sleep on My Side" - They always say opposites attract but Megan has a different opinion about that. Her and her boyfriend are wayyyy too different to make this work out. She likes the country, he likes the city. She lies iced coffee and he likes hot. It just wasn't meant to be.[13]
  7. "Lucky" - In this song, Megan lets loose and temporarily forgets her worries as the Tequila enters her system. She has a good time in the bar putting her past behind her.[13]
  8. "Fix You Too" - The song is about being 'too' selfless. Megan was willing to give her boyfriend all of her energy and attention until she didn't have any more to give herself. She clams that she can't fix him while also trying to fix her broken self.[13]
  9. "Mustang or Me" - This song is about Megan's 2010 Mustang that she still drives. She keeps it because it reminds her of her past relationships. She goes through another breakup and wonders who will break down first, her or the Mustang.[13]
  10. "Why Johnny" - This is a song about Johnny Cash and Jun Carter. Megan asks the spirit world for advice about the rough few years of a relationship.[13]
  11. "He Made Me Do It" - The ultimate revenge song, inspired by Miranda Lambert. In this song she goes to court for stabbing her boyfriend's eye with a high heel but she says she doesn't regret a thing.[13]
  12. "Sad Songs For Sad People" - Though the title makes this song appear sad it is actually very sweet, and heart felt. It is about a guy who treats her better than all her exes did.[13]
  13. "Traitor Joe" - In this song Megan tells her friend the truth, she saw her boyfriend cheating on her with another girl. But in this Megan also hints that she wants to be the boyfriend's other girl once they break up.[13]
  14. "Georgia Girl" - This song is about resilient Georgia girls. Her boyfriend cheated on her with other girls from other states, and they may not be over him but Megan sure is.[13]
  15. "Wonder" - This song is about how people should be more in the moment and less involved in technology/social media. Megan also hints that a boy you are with should be loyal and not make you wonder about what he is doing.[13]
