Use some IF code so users blocked by the abuse filter will have it described as "the abuse filter" or "an automated script" not "Abuse filter" Krett12 (talk) 06:40, 29 January 2016 (UTC)

Block message for anon only blocks

Quick question regarding how this message displays for individuals affected only by a soft block on their IP. Does it change to state something along the lines of if you have an account already please log in? If not could it be changed to say something along those lines? I looked in the code to see if there is anything like that but I don't see any switches that would indicate it is already there. I just feel like innocent people who are caught in a IP only block may not realize that it is not them and they are just logged out. Having this notice, obviously only when the block is anon only, can help ease some of the confusion. Thoughts? --Majora (talk) 02:42, 3 May 2016 (UTC)

 1. Consider changing the link on the bolded word blocked to be a direct link to Wikipedia:Blocking policy.
 2. Change the wording at "you are not currently able to edit, move, or create them" to "you are currently unable to edit, move, or create them".
 3. Consider placing <span class="nowrap">...</span> around "Help:I have been blocked" at the bottom. The link does not look that great when wrapped.

— Andy W. (talk ·ctb) 03:29, 14 May 2016 (UTC)

Partly done: Thanks for your requests here. :) I've prevented the link from wrapping, but I haven't carried out request #1 or #2. Linking to WP:BLOCK is probably better than linking to the policy directly, as it is more flexible. If it was meant to specifically link to the policy then it would probably be a good idea to link it directly, but all it is doing is explaining the word "blocked", so if in the future someone decides to change WP:BLOCK to link to something that better explains the word "blocked", then we may as well use that. Also, we generally avoid changing these kinds of redirects per WP:NOTBROKEN. As for the "currently unable to edit" wording, usually that would be better than "not currently able to edit", but the big red heading already says "currently unable to edit", and I think it sounds a little jarring to have the exact same phrase two lines in a row. — Mr. Stradivarius ♪ talk ♪ 08:14, 14 May 2016 (UTC)
Got it, makes sense. Thanks for your feedback on the request. Cheers! — Andy W. (talk ·ctb) 08:20, 14 May 2016 (UTC)

Please change:

You are currently unable to edit pages on Wikipedia due to an autoblock affecting your IP address.

This is because someone using this internet address or shared proxy server was blocked. The ability of all users on this IP address to edit pages has been automatically suspended to prevent abuse by the blocked party. Innocent users are sometimes caught in an autoblock. It may be the case that you have done nothing wrong.

A user of this IP address was blocked by $1 for the following reason (see our blocking policy):

$2

This block has been set to expire: $6. The block ID is: $5.

Note that you have not been blocked from editing directly. Most likely your computer is on a shared network with other people.

As on many websites, Wikipedia administrators occasionally block accounts and IP ranges that are deemed responsible for or related to problematic activity. You may be an innocent victim of collateral damage, whereby a block of some other activity has accidentally caused your account to be unable to edit pages. If your editing access has been blocked by mistake, it will be reactivated very quickly, as soon as you let an administrator know of the problem. The box above gives the information you will need.

;What is a block?
:A block is a measure used to protect Wikipedia from possible improper use, or modification in breach of editorial policies. Once blocks are over, they become history unless problems recur. Blocks can apply to a user account, an IP, or a range of IPs.

Unblock request
If you are unjustly affected by this block, please copy-paste the following text to the bottom of your user talk page:

<blockquote><div>
<code>{&#123;unblock|reason=Your reason here &#126;~&#126;~}}</code>
</div></blockquote>

An administrator will show up shortly to review the block once you have added the above template to the bottom of your talk page. Make sure to replace "Your reason here" with your reason for unblocking.

Alternative option
You will usually get a faster reply by posting the <code>{&#123;unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~&#126;~}}</code> template on your talk page, as described above. If you find that you cannot edit your own talk page, you can submit a request to the Unblock Ticket Request System at the link below for assistance.

<table border=0 align=center><tr><td>

</td><td>
<div class="plainlinks" style="font-size:150%; margin:auto; text-align:center;">

</div>
</td></tr></table>

Even though requests sent to the Unblock Ticket Request System are viewable only by administrators and trusted volunteers, under no circumstances should you send us your account's password or reveal it to anyone else even if asked to.

This system exists for the purpose of reviewing blocks only—any request to make edits to articles on your behalf will be disregarded. Correspondence containing legal threats, personal attacks or rudeness are likely to be ignored and may result in the lengthening of pre-existing blocks.

I am proposing to change the block message to what is above in this section. This is for consistency with Autoblock text and to let editors who don't know what to do when they get blocked, to get clear instructions on what they can do. To show your stance, please type SUPPORT, NEUTRAL or OPPOSE. You must have been on the wiki for four days and have at least ten main space edits to vote. 120.18.18.74 (talk) 01:38, 25 March 2017 (UTC)

Survey

 • Oppose. Autoblocks have a greater chance of collateral damage affecting editors we want to keep around, hence the longer message and somewhat nicer language. This message is aimed at editors we explicitly don't want to be editing (at least temporarily). This change will lead to an increase in frivolous appeals with a much smaller to no corresponding increase in successful appeals. If someone can't figure out how to appeal a block, they don't have the competence necessary to edit Wikipedia. MER-C 05:32, 25 March 2017 (UTC)
 • Oppose per MER-C. We should avoid an increase in frivolous appeals.   — Jeff G. ツ (talk) 06:22, 27 March 2017 (UTC)

Message clarities

If "You are currently unable to edit Wikipedia" is better than "You are currently unable to edit pages on Wikipedia", remove the "pages on" from the "You are currently unable to edit pages on Wikipedia due to an autoblock affecting your IP address.". 73.1.57.180 (talk) 14:04, 12 June 2017 (UTC)

Please change the link that says "Submit an unblock appeal" to "Submit a block appeal", you are appealing a block, not an unblock. UpsandDowns1234 (🗨) 07:49, 22 July 2017 (UTC)

In the "Even if blocked..." sentence, I think a link should be provided to Special:EmailUser where it says "...email other editors and administrators". ToThAc (talk) 17:22, 16 October 2017 (UTC)

Not done (But open for more discussion) - piping to that link would leave them on the email form, with no argument as to who they are sending an email to, and is not available unless they also set up email. I could see linking to Wikipedia:Emailing users perhaps. — xaosflux Talk 17:34, 16 October 2017 (UTC)

A query on the current write-up

Is there a reason why the "appealing blocks" blurb is separate from the red boxed "If the block notice is unclear, or it does not appear to relate to your actions, please ask for assistance as described at" blurb? Shouldn't there be just one "To appeal the block..." blurb? Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk, contributions) 20:00, 19 November 2017 (UTC)

Probably a legacy; at one time, there were somewhat more than two boxes. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 23:22, 19 November 2017 (UTC)
