Marshall (name)

Marshall is an occupational surname stemming from the Middle English mareshal.[1] This originally denoted a groom or farrier, but later came to be a title for various types of official. It derives, via French, from a Germanic compound meaning "horse servant" (cf. mare and shalk).[2]
