The International Neural Network Society[1][2] was founded in 1987 by Stephen Grossberg[3] and other leading scientists[4] in the artificial neural networks field in tandem with the planning of the first International Conference on Neural Networks (now known as the International Joint Conference on Neural Networks). Grossberg served as the first President of the society and invited leading neural networks researchers of multiple persuasions to form its Board of Governors. The society held its first meeting of the Board of Governors in Boston, Massachusetts in 1988. The first issue of the Society's publication, Neural Networks Journal, was published in 1988.

Field of interest

The Society's fields of interest[5] include theoretical and computational understanding of the brain, machine intelligence and learning, big data, artificial and biological neural networks and intelligence, neural physiology, neural anatomy, cognitive science, and neuroscience.

Governing Body

INNS is governed by a Board of Governors elected by INNS members. Stephen Grossberg served as the first President of the Society. The Society held its first meeting of the Board of Governors in Boston, Massachusetts, USA in 1988. The first Board of Governors included:

Publications

The society sponsors one publication, the Neural Networks Journal, which is published twelve (12) times a year and distributed electronically. It can be accessed via Science Direct, which is used by over 8 million individuals worldwide. Neural Networks Journal has a 2024 impact factor of 7.8.[20]

Conferences

The society's flagship conference, the International Joint Conference on Neural Networks was founded in 1987 and was held in San Diego, California. The conference is conducted once a year and is held in tandem with the World Congress on Computational Intelligence every other calendar year. The Society also sponsors or co-sponsors several other conferences and symposia, including the International Conference on Pattern Recognition Applications and Methods, ICDS, ICINCO, and IJCCI.[clarification needed]
