Griffith is an unincorporated community in Cochran County, Texas, United States.[1] According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 12 in 2000.
History
Morton Smith, a land agent for the majority of Cochran County, hired one of his associates, Henry D. Chipley, to establish the town in 1934 under the name Oasis. The settlement's location on the former Campbell Ranch was intended to be a "green" place in the desert by Chipley. Before this, he had intended to establish another town called Chipley in eastern Cochran County but was unsuccessful. Oasis had one store that served several local oilfield employees. It was soon renamed Griffith for Karl Griffith, a local landowner and banker who built a grain elevator in 1950. Other businesses that opened in the area afterward were a cotton gin, a gas station-store, and some houses. The gin was owned by Griffith and built by a man named W.A. Sykes in 1937. The population was reported as 25 in 1982, but there was no population recorded in 1990. It decreased to 12 in 2000.[2]
Geography
Griffith is located on Texas State Highway 114, 70 mi (110 km) west of Lubbock and 2 mi (3.2 km) east of the New Mexico state line in northwestern Cochran County.[2]
Education
Today, the community is served by the Morton Independent School District.
