Waiting-for is the informal name for a trilogy of children's books written by Bethany Roberts between 1984 and 1994. The second instalment in the series, Waiting-for-Papa Stories, consists of seven new tales told by the rabbit mother from the first one, 1984's Waiting-for-Spring Stories. The book garnered positive reception like the inaugural title, and was followed by 1994's Waiting-for-Christmas Stories; Maine artist Sarah Stapler took over William Joyce's role as illustrator for the remainder of the series.

Synopsis

Papa Rabbit, the father narrator from Waiting-for-Spring Stories,[4] is running late on his way home. While his family waits for him, his husband Mama Rabbit decides to tell her children a new set of seven miniature stories—all featuring him—to assuage their worries.[3][5][6]

Background

Waiting-for-Papa Stories was the second book in the nicknamed Waiting-for Series.[1] Taking over for illustrator William Joyce was Sarah Stapler,[7] an artist from Bowdoinham, Maine.[8]

Reception

Louise L. Sherman, writing for the School Library Journal, gave Waiting-for-Papa Stories a positive review. She declared that "Children are sure to be captivated by the charm and gentle humor of the stories", and also took note of the change in illustrators between instalments: "Stapler's illustrations suit the stories well. Her rabbits inhabit a brighter and more elaborate home than William Joyce's rustic settings of the earlier book."[3] Stapler's efforts were compared to Arnold Lobel's by SLJ,[3] and those of Beatrix Potter and Thornton W. Burgess by The New York Times Book Review (which listed it as a title of interest).[5] The Bronx publication Wilson Library Bulletin said, "The simplicity [of Mama Rabbit's tales] adds to their aura of freshness and self-completeness."[9]

Sequel

Waiting-for-Papa Stories was followed in 1994 by Waiting-for-Christmas Stories, whose original draft Roberts had written around the time Waiting-for-Spring first came out.[1] Stapler remained on board as illustrator,[7] while Houghton Mifflin's Clarion Books imprint handled publication.[1]
